Summary of The Sound of Music

Shot in Salzburg against the majestic Bavarian Alps, The Sound of Music is considered one of the greatest screen musicals ever made. Winner of five Academy Awards, including Best Picture and Best Director (Robert Wise), the film, based on a real family and their true events, tells the story of a young postulate, Maria (Julie Andrews), who, after proving too high-spirited for the Mother Abess and other nuns, is sent off to work as a governess to seven unruly children. The Von Trapp family is run, in military style, by the seemingly cold-hearted Captain Von Trapp (Christopher Plummer), a lonely widowed naval officer. Seeing how badly he and his children need companionship, he proposes to the Baroness Schraeder (Eleanor Parker), a calculating, mutual friend of beloved family friend Max Detweiler (Richard Haydn). It is the baroness who soon realizes that it's Maria--with her warmth and love for the children--the captain really loves. It is nearly bliss for the newly formed family who loves to sing together--except for the cloud looming over their beloved Austrian horizon: Hitler is ascending to power, forcing Von Trapp to decide whether to join the Nazi party--which he loathes--or force his family to leave their home forever. One of the most memorable scores ever written (by Rodgers and Hammerstein) and breathtaking performances by Andrews, Plummer, and the seven children mark this classic as one of the world's most favorite films.

I don't know where to start with this one... Part of me actually liked The Sound of Music, which was very unexpected. Even though it was almost three hours long, I was still entertained. The other half of me hated it. I just don't understand why anyone would think that people would randomly break into song like they do in musicals. I just can't get it, try as I might. The Sound of Music was certainly better than other musicals I've seen. Ahem, West Side Story... At least the basic plot, sans music, was believable. After all, it really happened, minus the embellishments for the screen. I liked how the last act of the film took a turn for the darker, bringing war into the picture. It was a nice change of pace that contrasted nicely with the sugar-coated beginning. Despite the change of tone, The Sound of Music managed to flow smoothly and the story never missed a step. The acting was quite good. I know many other actresses were considered for the main role, but I can't picture anyone but Julie Andrews singing about the hills. She has a unique charm that fit the character beautifully, much like her performance in Mary Poppins. Even the children were bearable, but that may be because they didn't act anything like modern children do, especially in movies. Christopher Plummer nailed his role as the father and naval captain. He was stern and unforgiving, but at the same time caring. The music wasn't to my liking. I know a lot of people really love these songs, but many of them felt trite and forced. Especially tunes like "16 going on 17." Not my thing, I guess. At least the random dancing was kept to a minimum. But everything was a little to idyllic, with the exception of the final act.

The cynic in me hates this movie. It is pure cinematic fluff, so wholesome and sweet that I thought I'd need insulin. There wasn't one genuine villain in Austria, it seems: the marriage-minded baroness submits meekly, and even the Nazis are inept.... Read and rate it
