Maybe reading the book first just ruined it for me. I was a well-established Stephen King fan by the time I was introduced to Kubrick, through A Clockwork Orange (which is one of my all time favourite films), and while I thoroughly enjoyed his other films, I just couldn't get into Kubrick's Shining the way I could stay up all night reading King's. I don't hold it against Kubrick, though; many have tried and failed to capture King's flair on film, and only those who have cast Kathy Bates have succeeded to really psatisfy this die-hard Stephen King fan.

This is a movie that everyone has to see once in their life. With so many references and themes that surround the original idea of this classic horror film, it's impossible not to feel compelled to watch it. With it's quirky little kids to it's deranged characters with insane states of minds, it's thrilling from start to end. A classic film that must be seen, no exceptions. This film wouldn't be as great either without the amazing star of Jack Nicholson, the brilliant and ever so twisted mind of Stephen King and the creative Stanley Kubrick. That right there just those three, you know it's gonna be a good butt kicking movie.

Classic horror and suspense film which set the standard for all horror movies that followed it. Using a terrifying story written by Stephen King and a creepy old hotel as the setting for director Stanley Kubrick makes for a frightening tale of madness and murder. Jack Nicholson portrayal of a man descent into insanity is riveting. Many like the mini-series better but this is the original. Very different than the horror movies today because it uses wit and ingenuity and a great story with excellent pacing to create the psychological thriller that has stood the test of time instead of flashy CGI and SFX to mask a weak story.

It had been years since I last watched this. What I still liked this time around were the cinematography (all those memorable wide-angle shots) and the sets. This time around though, Nicholson was way over the top for me in terms of overacting. The exaggerated facial & verbal expressions were fresh to me back then, but are now a bit grating. It could be because too many other actors like Jim Carey have since emulated it and took it to an annoying level. I don't know, but it was too much, as well as too soon in the story. I would have liked to see a much more gradual and haunting unraveling. Having said that, I still found it pretty scary & gripping. And oddly enough, I actually liked Shelley Duval this time, and she normally bugs the hell out of me. Go figure! At least her performance was more natural than Nicholson's in terms of gradual dread. The "Making of" on the DVD was interesting, if only to make me think that Nicholson didn't have to stretch much for this role, and also that Kubrick really wasn't a fan of Duvall, regardless of how gracious she was in explaining his brashness in retrospect. All in all, I can understand why Stephen King was not pleased with the casting or the multiple plot alterations (from the book.) -NN

The last thirty odd minutes do not save this utterly wooden movie from being laughable. Shelly Duvall's performance is Razzie worthy, but the long, drawn out bits of exposition, static camera, and stoicalness of Danny kills any narrative movement. NIcholson looks bound from emoting by his supporting cast throughout ninety percent of this film.
And to mention the founding material, King wrote a strong mother figure in his novel and to strip that in the first film adaptation of King's book seems quite misogynistic to me--unless, of course, that's Shelley Duvall's interpretation of an opinionated, confident mother.
Horrible movie.

The story, in Kubrick's hands, is less of a ghost story than about one man's descent into homicidal insanity; and is less about the acting or the gestures than about the photography. The visuals are so well constructed, so effectively lit, and so masterfully shot, that the dialogue is nearly an afterthought (with the obvious exception of the famous "Here's Johnny!"). I thought the trio of principal actors was good, but not exceptional. Although I could believe that Nicholson's character was a depraved killer; I never got the sense that he was a husband and father. Shelley Duvall has little to do but to interrupt Jack's work and later, to scream. I suspect that the kid's character was diminished considerably, especially in relation to the book (which I have never read). "The Shining" power, possessed by the kid, was almost a footnote in the movie, but furnished the title of the novel. The film remains a masterpiece of mood, and of visual appeal; but is lacking in terms of its character development.

Stanley Kubrick's inspired version of the Stephen King novel, The Shining is perhaps the most effective psychological horror film ever. Truth be told, there's not a lot of bloodshed, there's not a lot of gore
just Kubrick (along with sometime-collaborators Ray Lovejoy in the editing room and John Alcott behind the camera) creating what could only be called 'beautiful tension'. The deep focuses, the sterile color schemes, the quick-slow-quick editing cuts; sometimes, even when there is nothing going on in the movie, you are nearly scared crapless.
So what if Stephen King hates the movie? It is still a massive achievement.

Overrated
Although all the ingredients are good, I feel that this film is a bit overrated. For me this is not one of Kubrick's greatest. Still it's far better than most horror movies.
