This was my first Ingmar Bergman film and I do believe it will be my last. With most overrated films (e.g. Citizen Kane, Aguirre, Taxi Driver), I can usually find something about them that I appreciate: the music, the cinematography, the acting, but The Seventh Seal did not really appeal to me on any of these levels. There wasn't even any unintentional humor or obligatory sex and violence to give it some campy charm. Yes, I got that it was drenched in Catholic and Cold War symbolism, but so what? To me, symbolism alone does not make a film, or any work of art for that matter, great. Symbolism is not that hard to do. For a film to be great, it at least needs a good story to hold the viewer's interest. Sadly, the story in this movie couldn't even sustain its meager, 96-minute running time. Its meditations on the nature of God and death may have seemed eye-opening at the time, but they didn't really provide me with any new perspectives.

Ingmar Bergman's classic about a soldier on the way home from the Crusades who encounters Death (literally, the guy with the black robe and the scythe) and challenges him to a game of chess is a beautiful, restrained exploration about the existence of God and the meaning of life. Max von Sydow, in an early role and the first of many great parts, plays the soldier with amazing depth for a character that exists in (essentially) an allegory.
