The Seventh Continent, 1989

Easily one of the most depressing films I've ever seen. I felt drained by the end of this film, but in that sense, I think Haneke was very successful. The camerawork, which tends to focus on seemingly mundane objects at the expense of the actors, is interesting. The near-absence of dialogue is also a powerful device, which in my case forced me to focus more on the actions of the characters. This film is certainly among the most unique I've ever seen. That being said, it is not for the faint of heart since it is brutally depressing, somewhat slow to develop and would be confusing at a purely superficial level.
