The Seven Year Itch is hilarious. The script was well written and full of comical sidenotes that take us into Richards (Tom Ewell) imagination and Monroe and Ewell both play their parts perfectly, Monroe as an innocently unaware albeit oversexualized twenty-something and Ewell as a bumbling middle aged man who talks to himself and is constantly imagining something or another.
Very funny.

The Seven Year Itch is based on a play, and you can tell: each narrative step is subtle and revealing. Monroe does a good job at being at once ditzy and sweet, seductive and naive, always utterly sincere. Her simple charms are played against the pretentions of Ewells character, exagerating the silliness of his fantasies.
You can watch this movie and look for the development of symbols and the unfolding of characters, or you can just watch it and laugh. The Seven Year Itch is really lots of fun.

The 7 Year Itch is a light-hearted commentary on social stereotypes, sexuality and political correctness in a 1950s male-dominated world. The contrast between puritanical ideals and the rawness and honesty of Monroes womanly nature are what make this movie something special & still worth a look after over 50 years.
Many viewers get stuck in the mire of male-female stereotypes brought out early in this movie. With wife & child gone Wilder is left with little but his doctors orders to not smoke, not drink, and his personal will to not fall of the wagon like Manhattanite husbands. When Monroe appears, though, all best are off.
Wilder creates a fantasy world in which the women in his life find him absolutely irresistible. No woman can escape what he has to offer, though we never quite find out what that is. Despite being, on the surface, highly sexist, these cut-away scenes are the build up to an unraveling that should not be missed or misunderstood. The premise dated, but thats not the point. This is a comedy of human nature, an allegory. Dont get your post-modern feminist panties in a bunch over the nitty gritty details. Monroes character is decidedly contemporary, and shows she is not an air-headed dumb blond. No matter how hard he tries, the created morals of man will never triumph over the self-aware honesty and natural instincts of Monroes character.
Vegetarians with a good humor will also appreciate the hilarious view of a 50s vegetarian diner (only 260 calories for his meal, and tips go to promote nudism!) Dont miss the signs on the wall featuring the daily specials.
This is a gem of a movie. Go in to watching it with the right attitude, and youll find yourself laughing solid for the first 30 minutes of the movie.
