Wow, what can I say? Perhaps you may have read the other reviews and are thinking to yourself: poor animation, bad adaption, terrible songs. Rubbish. What you find on this DVD is the one, true adaptation of Tolkien's vision for the conclusion to his epic trilogy. I can't help, tears in eyes, but to hold my family members closer whenever "Frodo of the nine fingers..." is sung. This song is so moving, that Peter Jackson is having Howard Shore translate it into elvish for inclusion in his movie. So, don't waste your rentals on the vastly inferior "Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring," go ahead and rent this and see the masterful adaptation that is Rankin Bass. Or, wait until October and buy the extended version with nearly 45 minutes added back in with a full commentary track recorded by PAUL FREES prior to his death. Or Not.

The Return of the King may be the worst movie that I have ever had the extraordinary displeasure of watching. Animated using the same saccharine models as The Hobbit (a significantly better effort -- and still not good), The Return of the King seems aimed at a truly childish audience. Playing fast and loose with both the plot and the spirit of Tolkien's book, the movie plays like an abysmal Disney musical-ized spectacle, featuring the vocal "talents" of Glenn Yarborough. This is not a movie that I would recommend to my worst enemy. Those who are looking for a children's interpretation of Tolkien's literary work would be better served to focus on The Hobbit. Those who have any attachment whatsoever to the integrity or intent of the book would do well to steer well clear of this abomination.
