8/10Great
John Ford's lighthearted dramedy set in an especially picturesque corner of the Emerald Isle shamelessly trots out every Irish stereotype in the book (except shamrocks and leprechauns) and oozes quaint from every O'rifice, but that's all part of what makes it such a beloved classic. Indeed, the film's dated sensibilities seem to make it more endearing with each passing year. Everything about the film is vintage Ford: rich cinematography, a strong but troubled hero, a hot-tempered heroine, and a colorful cast of quirky supporting characters (each one played by a frequent Ford collaborator). It's easily John Wayne's best non-western role and his best (of 5) on-screen pairings with his ideal leading lady, Maureen O'Hara. Anyone with an appreciation for old-fashioned, Old-World charm should find lots to love here.
