Profile of The Quick and the Dead

The mood of The Quick and the Dead is atmospheric, tense, and stylized. The plot centers around vengeance, rivalry, and crimes. It is a period, western, and action movie. Stylistically, The Quick and the Dead features an all-star cast and stars a strong female character. In approach, it is serious and realistic. It takes place, at least partly, in a small town. The Quick and the Dead happens in the Old West and in the 19th century. It is especially suggested for a boys' night. Note that it includes mild violent content.

Summary of The Quick and the Dead

Sharon Stone stars as Ellen, a beautiful gunslinger with a cloudy past. She arrives in the town of Redemption with a bone to pick, namely with one John Herod (Gene Hackman, BONNIE AND CLYDE, THE ROYAL TENNENBAUMS), with whom she shares a shady history. Ellen signs up for the annual quick-draw contest, which awards $230,000 to the winner, but her real motivation is revenge. Raimi incorporates beautiful photography and camerawork, and surprising new twists to the familiar spaghetti Western tropes, breathing new life into the genre.

Critics Reviews

Entertainment Weekly
The Quick and the Dead is too light to pack the dramatic punch of a true Western and too flat to pass as cheeky revisionism. It ends up in its own amiable, slowpoke limbo.
TV Guide
Hip, jokey western from cult director Sam Raimi. Recommended as an antidote to anyone still suffering from Wyatt Earp hangover.

Users Reviews

I nice riff on "Once Upon A Time In The West." Rent both for a cool double feature!
I should probably give this movie 3 stars. The cast is impressive, but the plot doesn't live up to the list of stars. The one exception (and the reason for a 4 star rating) is Gene Hackman. His performance is great and the film is worth seeing for...
