This movie is a Action/Drama/Thriller set in the Australian Outback. A policeman offers Guy Pearce a Proposition. Find and Kill your older murdering B^stard of a brother and Ill give you and your younger brother a pardon. And by the way you have nine days to do it. Nine days till Christmas. Kill your older brother to save your younger brother, that is the proposition. An all-star Australian/UK cast headed by Ray Winstone, Guy Pearce, Emily Watson, David Gulpilil, Richard Wilson, John Hurt and Leah Purcell. This is an excellently written movie, well acted and directed, with a bang splatter, slice & dice, outback justice ending. This movie earns 5*****STARS, in my humble opinion.

If you're looking for a believable study of the brutality that results when the social order is weak, this movie is perfect. If you're looking for a Western that you'll enjoy watching, may I suggest something starring an idealized Clint Eastwood or John Wayne? Sure, other Westerns won't have any Nick Cave songs in them, but since Cave's deep dark tones never grace the theater, this movie kind of doesn't either.

Because of what I had heard I was braced for the violence, so if you are you should be fine. I hate to say this but I wish it had been a little bit more movie and a little less film. As my title suggests I was a little too excited for this flick so I was underwhelmed by the end. Everything was good save for the one a couple parts that I didn't need. It was gritty and beautiful, I just wish Cave, Hillcoat, and Pearce would make another longer, more dialogue filled, MOVIE that was just as tight and well shot as this.

This is just great. A Western that feels fresh, like a Peckinpah film if Peckinpah had evolved. There are outbursts of intense violence, but it doesn't pervade the film. Rather, the violence simply colors the other events, like an accent, or a matte painting. The script by Nick Cave, as well as the score by Nick Cave, are the true elements that help this film to rise above it's genre. Also, the setting of the film (Australia) adds a twist that pops the film into another realm. Guy Pearce is astounding.

a very good western
great actors - Guy Pearce and Ray Winstone, and a wonderful atmospheric score by the movie's writer Nick Cave. Rough, suspenseful and contemplative, the movie is very well made and it raises some interesting moral issues. Not a lot of westerns coming out this days, and the ones who do come out aren't that great usually, this one is great, not just for fans of the genre.
