This was a decent rom-com. I laughed quite a bit, and very much enjoyed the casting all the way through. Reynolds and Bullock, despite their age difference, are believable and funny, as the odd-couple.
The film's shortcomings lie in it's rapid pacing, where we must believe that Reynolds goes from "dreaming you get hit by a cab", to well, the usual rom-com finish, in a four day span. I suppose it could happen, but what I really longed for, mid-stream in the film, was more time de-icing the Ice Queen. Bullock does a fine job portraying the cold, heartless, bitchy boss, but isn't given enough script to uncover the underlying reasons she's so cold and distant. We get very little 'opening up' from her, that would make the transition more believable (especially after only 4 days).
That said, if you can suspend your disbelief, you'll find an enjoyable romantic comedy, that's worth watching.
One thing I must say though -- the dog/eagle scene was atrocious, and should have been deleted. Better yet, it should never have been penned in the first place.

Plain and simple, here's the deal: The Proposal is very funny at times, very slow at others and is nothing more than a run-of-the-mill romantic comedy. I liked it. You will like it. No one will remember anything about it a year from now....

You could call this trite and predictable middle-brow stuff, but it is all about the cast. Ryan Reynolds and Sandra Bullock demonstrate great comic interaction, and give a playful sexiness to their parts. They are beautiful to look at, delightful to see move, and fun to hear. An old-fashioned---in the sense of semi-intellectually satisfying even if very non-demanding---couple hours at the movies. Relax and pretend the world is all rich and happy for a little while. Then rent, say, "Z," or "The Grapes of Wrath." Followed by a written essay on "What Is 'Real'?" and an optional donation to the Southern Poverty Law Center. (You think I'm kidding?) 10.09
