I remember how shocked I was the first time I saw this. I was utterly confused up until the last eight or so minutes, at which point the entire thing became almost perfectly clear. That was probably three years ago, and since then I've seen the film...

I remember how shocked I was the first time I saw this. I was utterly confused up until the last eight or so minutes, at which point the entire thing became almost perfectly clear. That was probably three years ago, and since then I've seen the film something like thirteen times, and I'm still figuring things out. I refuse to write any spoilers though, which makes writing this review tough. What I will say is that Christian Bale gives a very, very nuanced performance, there is a thin line running through his character, and it's terrific to watch him play around with. The Prestige is easily my favorite film, I never tire of it and every time I see it I pick out something new. Truly a magic trick put to film.

So maybe that's what killed this movie for me. I had high hopes, as the same writing/directing team of the Nolan brother was responsible for my favorite film, Memento. THe plot itself was decent, but the character development was very lacking. By the time the plot really gets going, i simply didn't care about these characters or what happened to them

I think this is a solid flick. It seemed a little slow until Scarlett appeared, but it got me worked up and kept me interested right on up to "The Prestige". It may not be as tight as your favorite surprise ending in other movies, and it may leave some explaining to do but with a stellar cast, and a script better than the vast majority of stuff churned out I would say this film is definitely worth your time. Not as good as Momento but just as good or better than Batman Begins, though maybe not as fun.

There's a four star, maybe five star, movie here about two men consumed by thier obsession with the other. It ends up consuming everyone around them before finally consuming them. I loved the gothic moodiness of the pic. The twists were great....

There's a four star, maybe five star, movie here about two men consumed by thier obsession with the other. It ends up consuming everyone around them before finally consuming them. I loved the gothic moodiness of the pic. The twists were great. However, there were too many times where I wasn't sure who was who in the dim lighting. Shocking revelations weren't that shocking because it would take me a couple minutes to figure out who we were watching.

I enjoyed this movie quite a bit actually. Its a rather dark picture, both in content and in cinematic aspects. While some of the premise is suspect and requires a bit of imagination stretching, its worthwhile to do so because you end up enjoying the dynamic between the two main actors more rather than becoming obsessed with the flaws. Its more a duel of characters than it is an action flick. I think the performances were great as well.

I've become a big fan of Christopher Nolan's, and I think The Prestige might be his best film yet. First of all, the visual aspects of the film were just great: the photography, the costumes, the sets, etc. They all drew me into the time period completely. The acting was also top-notch - gotta love Hugh Jackman, gotta love Michael Caine, Christian Bale is really starting to grow on me, and Scarlett Johansson... well... was just eye candy, but still a very good cast. Most of all, though, I enjoyed the story. I thought at first that its non-linear, story within a story within a story structure would annoy me, but it was so well done, that I had little trouble following it. As for the ending, some might quibble about it for various reasons - too un/predictable, too unrealistic, too riddled with plotholes - and I understand their complaints, but what I loved about the ending is that it totally changed my perception of the characters and made me go back and re-examine everything that I'd seen up to that point in the movie. I've noticed Nolan likes to do this in his films - pull the rug out from under his audience. As with his other masterpiece, Memento, you really need to see this film twice to fully understand everything that happens in it. If you don't feel it's worth the trouble to do that, though, then this movie probably just isn't your cup of tea.
