The Pirates! Band of Misfits, 2012

This film really disappointed me. I saw it with friends yesterday, and they all had similar opinions. Being a fan of Wallace and Grommit, and Chicken Run, I expected more. There wasn't enough excitement, humor or pirate antics. The film was actually rather boring. For some reason Charles Darwin was in this film, playing a Jerk who will do anything to win the coveted science prize---an audience with Queen Victoria. For another unexplained reason, the Queen is a large, nasty woman, who enjoys being cruel. The last 20 minutes of the film were the worst. I actually took off my 3d Glasses. I was so upset by those last 20 minutes I almost left the theater, something I have never done before. It was so strange, and odd. I came in expecting a fun, lighthearted film about silly pirates, and wound up watching a bizarre film about some not so misfit pirates attempting to win a science competition, and through that a pirate competition. The humor just wasn't there. I could see elements of different classic humor, and i could see how if they just went one step further the jokes might be funny... but they weren't. The cast seemed very off too--- Hugh Grant, a British man, in a film set in London, puts on an American accent. What?? This film definitely doesn't pass the Bechdel test. There is one main female character, the queen. Then there is one minor female character, a pirate up for the prize of best pirate. She has a couple small lines which mostly consist of her laughing evilly. Then there is one Pseudo- male character---oddly one of the "misfit pirates" who is a cross-dressing female pirate with a beard. Then we have 2 completely unimportant female characters in a Pub scene. Jane Austen and her friend. The women are not represented well. The captain and Darwin make several comments about scantily clad women. No women talk to each other. Most of the pirates have very few lines. This whole film worked up like an odd, too adult film with an oddly violent and strange ending. we all left feeling disappointed. 4/10
