unsatisfying
There are just too many story elements here, none of which seem to hold together or are dealt with in a satisfying way.

Powerful yet fresh Holocaust film
The Pianist perfectly paints a portrait of the Holocaust through the eyes of Wladyslaw Szpilman (Adrien Brody) by using slow, epic pacing to aid the portrayal of senselessness and bleak coloration in set and costume design which all provided an environment to appropriately complement the action on screen. High camera angles also serve to dishearten viewers about the action taking place below. The power of The Pianist is rooted in the raw, plenary, unrestricted depiction of the Holocaust. There are innumerable works of Holocaust film and literature that all attempt to capitalize on the significance and emotional impact that the Holocaust has, but that shouldn’t detract from what this work accomplishes as a feat of storytelling. Brody’s performance was definitely worthy of the awards it garnered: Brody captured the emotions of each scene in his eyes and managed, at the conclusion of the film, to convey a unique feeling of tiredness and downtrodden while keeping a glimmer of the motivation and hope in his eye that makes people human. Roman Polanski created a satisfying film by illustrating his gloomy vision of the Holocaust on screen while injecting freshness and uniqueness to a heavily addressed subject.

Another film about the Holocaust. Every single one I have seen up to now has done a good job of humanizing and individualizing the victims. Not here. Instead of a musical genius we are given a real, real boring guy to watch. Things only happen to him. I kept waiting. The Pianist kept waiting. Despite the digital fireworks and the great subject, Polanski managed to be boring.

It is often said that "The Pianist" is one of the most detailed and shocking accounts of the treatment of the Jews by the Nazis, with the atmosphere in Warsaw well captured and believable. Quite possibly, The Pianist will remain in the history of film-making as one of the most touching and realistic portraits of the holocaust ever made. And I agree. A well deserved 5 STAR rating.

I would definitely recommend this movie to anyone who wants or needs to be uplifted and know that good can and does come out of evil.

The Pianist is a moving account of one man's survival in Poland during World War II. Before the war, he's a pianist. During the German occupation of Poland, he's a fugitive Jew. Miraculously, he survives to play again. This pianist, Wladyslaw Szpilman, is flawlessly portrayed by Adrien Brody. He won the Academy Award for Best Actor, and rightfully so. Considering who he was up against, Brody's performance was easily the best of the year.
Aside from the striking visual imagery, one thing really stood out about The Pianist: it's almost neutral tone. It showed that during World War II, there were both good Jews and bad Jews. There were good and bad Christians, German, and Poles. The last thing we need is another film that tells us "The Germans were bad!" At this point in time, I think it's obvious that the events of WWII were horrific and the leaders of the German military were monsters. But, just like in anything else, there were still good Germans.
As dark and depressing as The Pianist's subject matter is, the film does end on an high note. Seeing that some people can find the courage to do what is right even in the darkest of times is very uplifting. The Pianist tells a very tragic story in a very unique way: from the viewpoint of one man, a simple pianist. The story is moving and paced very well. The acting is absolutely first rate. World War II dramas aren't always the most entertaining of movies. They can often be hard to watch due to the emotional strain they can place on the viewer. However, if you're looking for a powerful WWII drama, The Pianist comes highly recommended.

Several people here have questioned why this movie stands out when there are plenty of movies about the Holocaust. That's a question I was asking myself as I watched it. Then I realized that I was disappointed that I wasn't watching a movie about a hero. Other Holocaust movies focus on someone going to extraordinary measures to stand up to Nazis, to save strangers, or to at least save members of their own family. While the main character in this movie makes some attempts at saving his family and at working with the resistance, he fails. As millions of others like him failed. And then I realized, that's what makes this movie so great. It's one person's -- one very ordinary person's -- true testimony of survival.

It was refreshing to see a holocaust movie with the perspective of an individual who not only endures, but is left alone and at the mercy of those that help him. In addition, this movie starts before Nazi control of Warsaw, and it shows the gradual descent into horror the Jewish population experienced. For all these excellent aspects, I did feel the movie ran a bit long near the last hour. I also watched Brody's acting closely due to his Best Actor win, and I'm not sure why he won. Don't get me wrong, he doesn't do a poor job, but it's not oscar material. I watched Daniel Day Lewis in Gangs of New York; that is oscar material (in a movie most ignored).
