I still don't see the attraction the general public had with Hepburn. Sure, she's attractive, but she's not that good looking. Yes, she seems to be a very talented actress, too. But her accent, her diction, something just rubs me the wrong way. She pretty and talented, but I have no desire to seek out her performances in other films.
Not like I want to see more of Stewart. I can't get enough of this guy. He's played such a broad range of characters with seemingly no effort, yet each performance is trademark Stewart. The Philadelphia Story was no exception. He plays the role of a reporter assigned to get the "scoop" on Hepburn's character's wedding, and in the process he falls in love with her. Yes, some parts of the plot are a bit predictable, but maybe that's because this movie has been emulated so many times since 1940.
The dialogue was easily the high point of the film, aside from the stellar performances from Grant and Stewart. It was quick, witty, and sharp. The film's dialogue managed to the be concise and to the point while simultaneously seeming very realistic, a trait not many scripts can lay claim to. I can't imagine any cast delivering this script with such effect.
Although the ending was a surprise, most of The Philadelphia Story was a bit on the boring side. I enjoyed individual elements and scenes of the film immensely, but the overall product left me wanting something else, something more.

A film that combines romantic comedy with screwball comedy, The Philadelphia Story was probably intended as a satire on the staid old money families. Time may have rendered the satire obsolete, but the intelligent script and terrific performances by the entire cast makes the movie timeless. Jimmy Stewart steals the show as the cynical writer with the heart of marshmallow (watch for his drunken scene), Katherine Hepburn is cool and desirable, and Cary Grant is his usual sophisticated handsome self. Nice contribution by Virginia Weidler as that romantic comedy staple, the smart-aleck little sister. Unlike many films made from plays, it does not have that "stagebound" feel. Just a great film: all of the great parts combine to make an even greater whole.

I have to start off by saying that this was my first ever Katharine Hepburn and Cary Grant movie, together or not, and I am glad it was! This was such an adorable little movie where all parts were played perfectly. It made me laugh out loud, it made me smile and it made me 'aww' at the end. Katharine- flawless; Cary- too funny; Stewart- priceless. Just an all-around wonderful gem of a movie that is definitely worth your time! 112 minutes of pure fun! 4.5 stars. 2/5/09
