I usually enjoy period pieces, but that has to be one of the most badly acted and shallow movies Ive seen in years. All the characters were flat and uninteresting, and their entire motivation could be described in a few words. Lets see:
Mary Boleyn: Good hearted.
Anne Boleyn: Wants power.
The King Guy: Is a big jerk.
Everyone else: Are jerks and not as good hearted as Mary.
As for historical inaccuracies, I would let them slide if the movie was of good quality overall. This is not the case, and as such it merely carves another step down to the pit of mediocrity.
Two stars because I didnt turn it off before finishing (that would warrant a single star).

I would watch the film for the costuming and the supporting roles/actors. Unfortunately, the underdevelopment of and the unsympathetic main characters detract from the suspense and interest in the film. The key roles are either miscast and/or poorly written. The key characters are inscrutable because the film doesnt dig below their surfaces to show their underlying motivations. Why was the king such a player? Was he just a hapless, passionate romantic? A lustful Don Juan unable to control his urges? A cold, calculating man concerned with ensuring his lineage? It just wasnt clear whether his character was supposed to be sympathetic or villainous--and Eric Bana just didnt fit the latter type. Why was Anne Boleyn so obsessed with trapping the king, more even than her pushy relations? Was she motivated by greed, by jealousy of her sister, by need for parental approval?
The leading role was good for Natalie Portman, as it expanded her range. However, the converse isnt true. Portmans English accent is atrocious, and her delivery of the lines is too awkward and calculated to make her believably charming enough for me to see Anne Boleyns appeal to the king.
In contrast, Kristin Scott Thomas (the mother) and Ana Torrent (the queen) run circles around the main actors. Their characters are mature, insightful, and dignified; I kept rooting for them against the other characters. They and the other older supporting actors are just on a higher playing field than the leads.

Bana,Portman and Johansson do not have the chops (ahem!) to carry off their mercurial roles and the script is a disjointed mess. Locations and costumes were great, however...

A friend picked this for our movie night, and I was hoping it would be more interesting than I expected. Sadly, it turned out to be less so. There are good things about it -- it's a gorgeous production, and the cast outshines the material, even though Eric Bana's part is little more than a MacGuffin -- and there was a brief spark of early promise. By halfway through, though, issues with pacing, continuity and development had bogged the whole thing down. I'm sure I've been spoiled by watching The Tudors, but so be it.

The casting is excellent, the cinematography beautiful, and for awhile the story holds up its end as well. The first half is what you want historical dramas to be: a glimpse into famous events, about a time that we romanticize but don't know nearly enough about. The second half turns into historial soap opera though. Maybe there was just too much going on, or it was really that absurd in real life. Still enjoyable, but could have been better.

Adultery! Incest! Anal rape! European History class was never this interesting. Sadly, despite all that, this movie isn't that interesting either. What it is is a rather unoriginal period piece given an extra shot of sex in what I assume was a failed attempt to make the story more interesting and/or bring in a wider audience. It does, however, succeed in being a generally enjoyable film, largely due to the fine acting of the cast. There are no forgettable characters here, though the film is unquestionably dominated by its two female leads. Natalie Portman is, as always, fun to watch, playing a complete b*tch, but so reveling in it, it's hard not to enjoy it. Scarlett Johansson is talented as well, but she's playing the sad, love sick, shrinking violet that she's played many times, and that, quite frankly, is getting a bit tired. Besides its stars, this movie's other main appeal -- as it is in all period pieces -- is its visuals. The scenery, the sets, and the costumes are lovely, and the whole thing is directed beautifully, albeit a bit pretentiously, by Justin Chadwick, whose years as a television director are evident, as the whole thing feels at times like it would be more suited to a miniseries than a major motion picture. Despite the movie's flaws, the torrid, tragic story of Anne Boleyn and King Henry remains a captivating one, and if you're looking for more on the historical side of it, there are plenty of fine documentary specials available. If you're looking for more on the sex lives of the Tudors, I'd recommend the Showtime series of the same name. But, I suppose, if you're looking for a decent movie that falls somewhere in between the two, then "The Other Boleyn Girl" is for you.
