Could have been better.
I have nothing against Jim Carrey, but the film would have been more enjoyable if it had starred another actor -- he simply doesn't suit the role at all due to his acting style.
The plot itself had great potential, but it wasn't executed as well...

I have nothing against Jim Carrey, but the film would have been more enjoyable if it had starred another actor -- he simply doesn't suit the role at all due to his acting style.
The plot itself had great potential, but it wasn't executed as well as it could have been. It also loses points for its rather stale ending. One needs a highly elastic suspension of disbelief if they want to sit through the film without rolling their eyes at certain scenes; unfortunately, mine was stretched to the breaking point. The dialogue was rather irritating as well, particularly the voice-overs. On the other hand, the movie does succeed in catching your attention, keeping you watching in order to get some answers. Just don't expect to be terribly satisfied when they finally arrive.
All in all, this isn't a terrible film. It certainly had it's interesting moments, and while he didn't quite live up to the role, Jim Carrey's acting was decent. It's just a shame that the movie didn't reach its full potential.

The cut scenes with the charatcer in the book kind of made a little disconnect but the script kept brining you back in.

I give it 2 1/2 stars if I were able to. This is an interesting flim with an independent feel to it. The story suffers when Jim Carrey plays duel roles (which mostly never work). I loved the fact that this film took chances and was the anti-summer film but that alone can't make a film. It was disjointed and confusing at times when it didnt have to be. Overall Number 23 helf my attention till the end and Jim Carrey was at his insane best but Joel Schumacher makes some great films but here he seemed to be doing his own side project without letting the audience in on the fun. This one just missed out on being a great thriller but was worth the Carrey perfomance alone.
