The movie has great scenery and a great cast. I did feel that this film went on for quite a while, and as my boyfriend put it, "the end was rushed" (colombia and venezuela were barely a minute each). But the movie still does a great job of showing the transition from innocent/naive college student to what he would later become.
As for the reviewer "Jon Paul," I was born in latin america do not agree with the revolutionary ideals of Che and did not feel like the movie was intended to be pro-communist propaganda. If the backdrop was the united states I don't think people would have even thought that. Also Jon, latin americans are "mixed" racially, unlike Hitler's Germany. Please learn some history before making assumptions. Thanks

I wonder how a movie glorifying Hitler's travels across Austria as a young man would be received by today's culture? Both Che and Hitler both sought totalitarian rule over people in order to inflict their (slightly different) flavor of proper morality. However, people today seem to think that initiating force upon others in the name of "the people" is somehow moral and proper. Please check your premises about how people should deal with one another: either you think that enslaving others for your purpose is moral or you think people should deal with one another by voluntary free trade.
This movie was hard to watch given the obvious love of the would-be dictator Che.

Taking into account that it's based on real facts, it's interesting to see a part of an early period of Che Guevara's life.

"This isn't a tale of heroic feats. It's about two lives running parallel for a while, with common aspirations and similar dreams." -Ernesto "Che" Guevara, The Motorcycle Diaries.
Another film based on a book I haven't read - so I cannot say how faithful it is in adaptation - but it certainly seems to have been lovingly done.
It's the true story of best friends Alberto Granado and Ernesto "Fuser" Guevera (both get the nickname "Che" during their travels) who make one long journey before beginning their careers in medicine. It's at once, a biopic, a road movie, a buddy picture, a memoir & travelogue, and a coming-of-age story.
Beautifully photographed, from Venezuela to the Amazon jungle, the filmmakers take us on the mother-of-all road trips, the one that every guy I know ever wanted to do - travel thousands of miles on a vintage European motorbike seeing the land and it's people. Most may never actually get to do that, but watching this film is a bit of a vicarious thrill. And while there is little talk of revolution, we definitely see some of the experiences that would change a young man from aspiring physician to revolutionary.
Peppered with traditional music of Latin and Native America, it's a movie that celebrates life, even in some of the most harsh, bitter and scenic places on earth.

The Motorcycle Diaries is a film about a road trip taken "Che" Guevara while he was still a medical student. He and a friend take a motorcycle across South America, from Argentina through Chile, Peru, Venezuela, and Columbia. The direction and cinematography are stunningly beautiful. Beautiful South American landscapes, from Machu Picchu to the Amazon, make for some amazing scenery.
All of the performance's were great, especially Rodrigo De la Serna, who played Guevara's travel companion. The entire supporting cast of the movie felt real. Everything about The Motorcycle Diaries felt real. Nothing seemed cliche or overly "Hollywood." The story was well told and quite enjoyable. One thing seemed odd to me: the motorcycle was only in about half of the movie. I guess I was expecting it to last the entire voyage. And I loved the way the movie closed. It seemed to fit the style of the film so well.
Picture and sound quality were both far from perfect, but certainly acceptable. The picture lacked sharp detail and some shadow delineation, but otherwise looked very good. The colors were nice and vibrant and just enough film grain was present to make everything feel authentic. The sound mix was simple but good. The surrounds were only occasionally used to reinforce some atmospheric effects. Dialog was clear and seemed understandable, but it was in Spanish so I can't really say. This DVD was a very good presentation of The Motorcycle Diaries.
If you're looking for a good story about the human spirit and how seeing the world from a different perspective can change you, then The Motorcycle Diaries comes highly recommended.

The movie was only passable as a road trip / buddy movie, and a failure as a look at the forces that produced Che Guevara. The 'revolutionarry beliefs' are watered down so much that even George Bush could admire them [be nice to lepers, give the poor workers water, etc]. There is NO indication in the movie that Guevera's companion was much more radical and political at the time, and Guevara himself is little more than a nice, handsome doctor. At the end of the movie he seems en route to becoming another Mother Teresa, not a revolutionary.
