The Messenger, 2009

"THE MESSENGER" is a good character study of two army men whose mission is to notify next of kin that a loved one had died in Iraq or Afghanistan. Both men have "issues." The older is career army, but hasn't really seen any active duty in war. The younger is a decorated Iraq vet, wounded, and angry. Neither seem fit for civilian life. Their stressful job of notifying next of kin brings out their issues, and somehow helps them find their humanity. The pace of the film is a tad too slow, and some "heavy" conversations go on too long; there's even a scene or two that should have been cut. But again, it's a very worthwhile character study and a chance to see some fine acting not only from the principals but from those who play loved ones on the receiving end of the worst news in the world.
