The Magnificent Ambersons, 2002

Such a inviting premise---a faithful re-make to rescue a notorious butcher editing-job of a 1940s classic. And it is not at all bad. Yet I have to say, though, that I became increasingly irritated by the actor named Jonathan Rhys Meyers, who plays a character of ambiguous motivation. But he went way too far, and by the end of the movie I did not merely hate the character but couldn't stand the sneering actor JRM, who seemed personally pained and bitter or contemptuous about even appearing in this movie. By the bitter end, that's how I felt, too, watching him. Catch the Orson Welles version instead, which managed to retain a lot of good stuff anyway, although it may be out of print. 4.09 _______ (The unfortunate Rhys Meyers is supposed to be much better in the series "The Tudors," which I have not seen. And come to think of it, he was quite good in "Match Point," when I did not know who he was, and just enjoyed the movie.)
