The Last Station, 2009

This comes dangerously close to the Masterpiece Theater treatment that has been done to death. But it is rescued by an exceptional cast and a powerful screenplay. The stormy relationship between Tolstoy and his wife is paralleled by the one between Valentin and Masha. The Oscar nominations for Helen Mirren and Christopher Plummer are certainly deserved, but I was more enthralled by the subtle, quiet performance of James McAvoy, whose role as Valentin really holds the plot together.
