Reality strikes again
I cant help it. But no matter how you twist and bend on it, movies based on reality and not America are better.
Kevin Macdonald steps half way out of his normal shoes to make a film that is amazing. You laugh, you cry you understand. This story is real, its breathtaking and it is giving. James McAvoy wears his role as the young doctor seting out to save the world with eligance, and goes allong with Forest Whitaker as brothers as he gets lured into the dictators hands and sudenly turns out as the bad guy. Since the storry has its roots in a real story the plot is un-questionable and director Kevin Macdonald gives just the right push. This movie is absoulutley a must-see. No doubt.

Acting Brilliance
Adapted from the 1998 novel of the same name by Giles Foden, The Last King of Scotland views a period of the reign of Idi Amin through the eyes of his (fictional) Scottish personal physician Nicholas Garrigan (James McAvoy).
Garrigan arrives in Uganda on a whim, partly to do good assisting in a rural hospital, and partly to party, which he does almost immediately with a fellow doctor's wife (Gillian Anderson).
Garrigan soon encounters the new President, Idi Amin (Forest Whitaker), who promises a golden age for the African nation. Garrigan hits it off immediately with the rabid Scotland fan, who soon offers him a senior position in the national health department and becomes one of Amin's closest advisers. However as the years pass, Garrigan notice Amin's increasingly erratic behaviour that grows beyond a legitimate fear of assassination into a murderous insanity. Various people attempt to guide Garrigan and warn him of what he's getting himself into. He declines to see the truth until it's too late.
The Ugandan landscape is shown in all its glory with the help of the amazing cinematography by Anthony Dod Mantle, while Whitaker's larger than life Amin is so convincing that you quickly forget he is acting. He is able to switch instantly from the happy charm that made Amin champion of the people, to the madness that led the infamous dictator to kill almost half a million.
A great film made even better by the amazing performance of Forest Whitaker.

Based on factual events, this movie is very good. I gave it a three because I thought it left off of some parts of the storyline. Constant themes in this movie are power, greed, corruption, love, and confusion. It's still a good movie and I learned about something brand new to I. The true story about Whitaker's character.

Whittaker's performance is good enough to keep your attention through the rest but there is not much else to see here.

"The Last King of Scotland" is well worth watching but it disappoints. Though very well acted, the film draws almost all its interest from the unusual story. But it is all plot and the human relationships between the protagonist and, first, the wife of a mission director, and then one of the wives of bloodthirsty dictator Idi Amin of Uganda seem tacked on and, well, sort of hard to believe. The latter relationship seems simply to serve as the means by which the feckless hero realizes Amin is indeed a very bad man; without the would-be romance, we would fault the character for simply trying to save his own privileged skin.
