The Last House on the Left, 2009

Well, it isn't terrible. This remake of Wes Craven?s debut isn't as good as the original. It's not quite as suspenseful, and the payoffs are sometimes overshadowed by the gratuitous gore. The Last House on the Left is gory. It's not like Saw gory. There's emotion attached to the blood, not just it squirting all over. The plot is rudimentary at best, as most horror films are. A family goes on vacation in the woods. Their daughter, Mari (Sara Paxton), goes to stay with friend Paige (Martha MacIsaac) for the night. Paige ends up running into to a clan of murderers; two conspired to kill the cops carrying ringleader Krug (Garrett Dillahut). We know this at the start of the film. Because Paige and Mari stumble upon the fugitive posse, they must be silenced. So Krug kidnaps them, steals Mari?s car and hopes to flee. On the way, Mari is able to distract Krug, who loses control of the car, causing it to careen into the woods until it strikes a tree head-on. Mari and Paige attempt run off, but are once again captured. Mari is brutally raped. Mari again escapes after she's raped, and runs into the lake to swim away. She is shot in the back and left for dead. We all how well leaving someone for dead works out in horror films. Because of the accident the fugitives must find a place to use a phone or find a car. The only house around the lake is Mari's parents's home. They eventually find out about the rape, and go on a crusade to (1) get out of the house and to a hospital and (2) kill the ones who raped Mari if necessary. The fight scenes and killings are well choreographed and realistic. The way they end is pretty creative as well.
