In my mind Sterling Hayden was the perfect noir hero - equal parts tough and vulnerable - and this movie fires up all the nerve endings in my brain that make me partial to crime thrillers. Stanley Kubrick made more "accomplished" pictures later, some polished so shiny and perfect it's hard to look at them directly or even stay awake while watching them, but here he spins out a grimey little yarn about a race track robbery with minimal '50s psychobabble and maximum excitement. I like "Dr. Strangelove" and "Paths of Glory" more, but when I hear the name Stanley Kubrick this is the first picture that pops in my head. Sterling Hayden's look at the end is priceless.

"The Killing" is said to be a "classic" noir, but it's classic only in the sense of "old." And it tries to be hard-bitten like great noirs but comes off as only par-boiled. The movie takes the form of a heist flick, but instead of plausible planning as in, say, "Rififi," the bozos in "The Killer" only succeed because the screen-writer forces it; nothing in this movie is believable. The acting is decidedly second-string, as is all the other film elements, including the direction, music, cinematography and (especially) the weak script. I know it's Kubrick's first major picture, but to me it's great virtue was being only 83 minutes.
