The movie is just... alright
If it wasn't for the unconventional family structure, I think this movie would have passed by pretty unnoticed. Nothing in this story is new, and it develops and ends in a very predictable way. The only reason it gained attention is the somewhat original twist of the lesbian parents, and the fact that the movie doesn't make an issue out of it. Unfortunately, something in the acting of both main leads wasn't convincing for me, like it was with Brokeback Mountain, and so I was eventually disappointed.

Technically proficient, great acting and directing but hey, what exactly is the story again? Initially I thought it was just one of those films with an unnecessarily complicated unduly sexually loaded storyline. Actually that's exactly what it is....

It's cute and pleasant, warm and fuzzy kind of date night film. But nothing more.

The kids are not just all right, they're perfect. The family is so perfect that it'll be the envy of families both gay and straight. They're not just pretty, white, suburban, with a Volvo SUV, everyone knows just when to rein in their unruly emotions and become perfectly reasonable. Why, they even manage to tame the sperm donor "interloper", leaving him dissatisfied with his hitherto hedonistic, bohemian, happy life. This family is most certainly what we should all aspire to.
All that is of course reason enough to sit through this movie, but that's not what makes it tolerable. It is truly well written, directed and acted, which quite remarkably connects us with the humanity of this otherwise exemplary milieu.

The Kids are GREAT!
I just saw this flick with my group of four girlfriends, and we all have not stopped raving about it! The cast was wonderful, and I was so happy to see Mark Ruffalo and Annette Bening in something again and to make it even better, they were together. It was the most talked about movie at Sundance Festival 2010, and I completely understand why. The cast was superb, the acting was genuine, the dialogue was brilliant, and the movie was just captivatingly honest. If you are looking for a good drama, or just a good movie, I definitely recommend this movie. I think I might even be seeing it again tonight!

Be sure this film is not discussing any topic that hasn't been discussed before. Yet, this gender-centric, family values film is very charming and truthful. Two kids, made by artificial insemination, children to a lesbian couple, are looking for the biological father. "Bio-dad" Enters their life and of course he brings uncertainty and awkwardness to the warm family routine. All in all, the film succeeds to be this warm, touching little intimate piece that it wants to, making the viewing worth while.
