Would've been awesome
It's pretty much a remake on Logan's Run, I mean not completely, but it's still the same concept.. the characters even have the same kind of names. There's still a lottery. Graphics, and cinematography were awesome though.

Michael Bay takes it... over the top... again.
I'm not sure who exactly tried to ruin this movie, but I'm blaming Michael Bay, because it's convenient.
The setting of the story is really good, with the dissident protagonist starting to question the social construct around him, finally evolving into outright rebellion against a system that he sees as opressive.
The first 35 minutes of the (2h 15min) movie are really exellent piece of movie storytelling, but after that point it's starts to decline. The bad guys seem to get all the tough breaks. Where as the protagonists seem to implausibly luck out all the time, up to the point where they crash a flying motorcycle into a skyscraper and then proceed to fall off said skyscraper, and surviving without a scratch. It was so over the top that after that point most of the tension and drama were just gone.
The cast was great, with Ewan McGregor and Scarlett Johansson as the main protagonists, and Steve Buscemi as the conveniently placed wise old sage to give the naïve protagonist help and advice that saved the day in the end. And Sean Bean as the evil Dr. Merrick, who in the end throws away his lab coat and grabs a gun to go fight Ewan McGregor personally. I didn't really get whether he was supposed to be a doctor or some sort of a supervillain. But I quess that the last 30 minutes of the movie was mosly supposed to be this big action finale, and wasn't really part of the main story, and it wouln't have been fair to leave Sean Bean without a fight scene.
But even with the over the top action and implausibly convenient plot carriage, it still manages to be more than just entertaining. It's not great, but pretty good.

Djimon Hounsou's character of the Navy Seal mercenary type is very interesting. Djimon is the Blade Runner of this movie, able to be ruthless, but in the end compassionate, this is just one of the little gems in this movie that made me really enjoy it. Steve Buscemi, what can you say, Steve Buscemi is Steve Buscemi, Never a bad performance, Ever. The only complaint I have with the movie is the very final scene, Ewan and Scarlett on the boat. I felt that there should have been some close ups of the couple finally able to get away, it left me with sort of an empty feeling. The entire movie was building up to that final scene, and to give it such a short shrift, well it just did not make any sense. But I enjoyed the rest of the movie so much that I am prepared to overlook the short comings of the last scene. I give it 5 ***** Stars.

The Island was no disappointment. Actually, it was surprisingly refreshing. I have my complaints, but even though the movie was far from perfect, it was darn good.
The first half of the movie sets up the world as the clones know it: a bright, clean environment sealed off from the "contaminated" world where they await their turn to head to the Island. Slowly, Ewan McGregor's character starts to ask questions, and the answers he uncovers are quite disturbing. He grabs his friend, played by Scarlett Johansson, and they run.
The story is great fun, and it affords Bay the opportunity to paint a pretty neat picture of the future. The acting ranged from fantastic (McGregor) to merely acceptable (Sean Bean). The special effects were awesome and the action rocked. If Bay can do one thing right, it's make an action movie. The chase scenes in The Island are phenomenal. When Bay cranks up the action, it's a full-on sensation overload. Things fly by the camera, or the camera flies by them at break-neck speed. The shots change quickly, keeping the pace moving, but the editing isn't so choppy that things get confusing. The action surrounds you and you can't escape. I love this stuff...
My biggest complaint? That's a no-brainer this time: the product placement. I know that Bay needed more money to make The Island they way he thought was best, so he enlisted the help of a few corporate sponsors, but I think he took it to far. Not only was it annoying, but it dated the movie. X-Box? MSN Search? Aquafina? Puma? I could list more, but there's no need. In the future, whatever video games look like, the console won't be called an X-Box with the same lame logo it has now. MSN's logo will have changed, if Google hasn't wiped them out of existence yet. You get the picture...
But product placement aside, The Island was enjoyable, tense, fast-paced, and fun. The acting was good, the effects were great, and I loved Bay's direction.

This is not a movie I would normally bother writing a review for, but the surprisingly positive reviews give me no choice! Potentially interesting idea, poorly executed in my opinion. It does have the greatest chase scene of all time, though.

It was a recycled bunch of crap I'm afraid with storyline references to oh um let's see: Gattaca, The Matrix, Blade Runner, Logan's Run, THX1138, Minority Report and more... Actually, it's whole visual theme is nearly a clone of the bleach-bypass work in "Minority Report," a film I thought was far better than it's box office or reviews would reveal. "The Island" is long and derivative with an annoying tendency towards needless action sequences that don't advance anything but the film budget. Ewan is wasted and Scarlett is primarily eye candy. It's not worth even the time spent reading this mini-review.

Nice
there's nothing special in it, to tell the truth. I saw films with similar plot before. but still, it gets the job done for the genre fans, and I liked it.
