The Interpreter is proof the even the most talented film makers in Hollywood can make bad movies. Take a great cast, a respected director, and a talented crew and pair them with a horrible screenplay and the result will almost always be a disaster. The Interpreter is often described as a taught political thriller. Well, I think calling it a loose, apolitical, bore-fest is probably closer to the truth.
The only character that was even remotely interesting was Sean Penns, who was back on the job as a Secret Service agent just a few weeks after his wife had died. Nicole Kidman might be pretty and she might be talented, but I had a hard time buying her as a white African. Shes just too Hollywood to play a woman who grew up in Africa during times of rebellion and civil unrest. Every other character in The Interpreter felt like a generic placeholder with no real depth or personality.
The political intrigue was anything but. Why should I care about the possible assisination attempt of a fictitious leader of a fictitious country half-way around the world? The man was portrayed as a monster, so why not let him be assisinated? Its obvious from the beginning whos involved in the attempt; Im not sure why it took Sean Penn so long to figure it out.
So, in short, stay away from this boring stinker. An uninteresting plot, silly characters, and poor pacing make The Interpreter hard to sit through.

I would have really liked this movie alot more if they could have kept the pace of the last 45 minutes throughout the entire movie. It was a good story and good acting on Kidman's part and outstanding acting on Penn's part. In reality, this movie isn't outstanding. There are a few good twists and the pacing towards the end of the movie is really good, but the middle of this movie (about a hour's worth) really dragged to the point that I was constantly checking my watch.
There is some female rear-nudity (in a strip club), quite a bit of violence including decomposing corpses, and plenty of language. Typical R-rated movie fare.
This movie is a good movie but not outstanding. If only the pace of the last part could have been held throughout the movie.

The movie however suffers in the end as it slips from the director's hand. Sean Penn gives a very intelligent performance, howver Nicole Kidamn is outstanding and gives a great performance. Watch out the movie just for her.The dialogues are very well written and are powerful.

Nicole Kidman actually pulls off the white South African trying to Americanize herself with some acting deftness, but the load placed on her character by the script proves too much.
