The worst thing a supernatural thriller can do is try to provide the viewer with too much information. More often than not, the eeriest element in a well executed horror film is in fact, its ambiguity. Jack Claytons The Innocents is such a case. A film that thrives on viewer interpretation, it offers a bevy of possibilities, anyone of which is plausible. For those familiar with Freudian analysis, the film may seem a bit forward at times, but that in no way takes away from its marvelous performances (Kerr and Stephens in particular), expertly crafted cinematography (Oscar winner, Freddie Francis), exceptional script (penned by Truman Capote and William Archibald ) and methodic pacing. This is a great film.

You want to love this movie as a ghost thriller, but nothing is explained and not a lot makes sense (even the kind of sense youd need to love a ghost story) and you end up scratching your head.
You then may want to think of the original story and love it for that...but the actors (particularly Deborah Kerr) make that pretty impossible.
Its as if the main actors took Mr. James book and Mr. Capotes screenplay, read both, and threw them both away. Which does a huge disservice to book and screenplay...not to mention we, the viewers.
This movie could have been a classic. As it is, however you look at it, its just a sad mess.
