Matt Damon's best acting so far
What elevates this corporate crimes movie from similar stories (like The Insider for example), other then the offbeat, humorous storytelling and the twist towards the end, is Mat Damon's great performance. He's amazing as the obsessive pathological liar. I think it's his best acting job to date. Following his twin's recent directorial successes (Ben Affleck), I now wait to see Damon acting in Affleck's next movie.

3 and half stars. This is a likable film, slightly overrated. Set in the earler 90's, Matt Damon plays an executive whistleblower at ADM who exposes price fixing in the agribusiness industry. It's handled with a light touch, maybe too light, and Matt Damon turns in another reliably good performance. I liked the movie as far is went, but I felt it focused too much on Damon's off-center character quirks and not enough on the corporate crimes he was involved in. It treats fraud and cartel pricing as a vehicle for deadpan comic character study. A fine approach, I suppose, but it ultimately feels trivial. So it's not a corporate thriller, or a straightforward comedy- director Steven Soderbergh's indie sensibilty won't commit to either- but it's engaging enough to recommend.

"THE INFORMANT!" is a fascinating character study of a clever and likable guy who's also more than a little nuts. His tale of price-fixing at corporate giant ADM gets the attention of the FBI, and earns him the exiting role of wire-wearing mole and the haloed mantle of whistle-blower. But as the drama unfolds, we begin to see another side of his character, more duplicitous and with a very fluid conception of reality and honesty. Matt Damon does a terrific job of bringing this seemingly simple corporate drone to life -- and that's a good thing because the film offers little beyond the twists and turns of the character's psyche. Still, this fellow is hard to forget. The DVD has no extras.
