This movie cheats. We are asked to believe that a magician could make believable 3D holograms in 19th Century Vienna. We are asked to believe that the Inspector could figure out all the mysteries in the last two minutes of the film using zero clues. The Shylaman-style ending, as someone wrote earlier - is "OMG No Way!" because, really no way. The film was decent enough until then.

I watched this movie twice till now. Ed Norton is one of the finest actors I would say. I became his fan after I watched Fight Club etc. He knows his characters well and how to portray them on the screen. Specifically in this movie director Neil Burger has done a fantastic job of filming this 19th century story where an Illusionist by name Eisenheim wins his childhood love from the hands of the arrogant Prince. And Ed perfectly suits for this roll. How he wins his love and what tricks he uses is what you should watch in the film. I should applaud the work of Pual Giamatti as the police officer, the son of a butcher who wishes to climb up the ladder in the society with the help of the Prince. But when it comes to the question of justice he would not care who did the crime. Crime should be punished and that's what his character does in this movie. This is one of the movies where I liked Paul's action. Jessica does her role pretty well too. One thing I wanted the director to answer is how the tricks of making people disappear or getting Jessica from the "Other world". Atleast he should have answered how Ed does that. On the other hand, we can justify saying that this is a movie about Illusions and Ed is an illusionist :) All in all, this is the kind of movie you would not want to miss. Hats off to Ed and Neil and whoever the producer is ...I think it's Bob Yari group.

Norton continues to prove his awesomeness. He makes even the simplest of movies (in this case, a somewhat-standard magician movie) into a tour-de-force worthy of his amazing filmography. The sense of mystery, mystique and mysticism he brings to this role overshadows every other element of the film.
