*spoiler* This is a drama, but not a normal one. It's plot moves in chunks, in snippets, in odd time signatures. You might not recognize what is so different about it at first, but go back and watch it a second time. It moves in almost 6 acts, each one more awkward than the last, until finally the ice storm itself happens and we get the most awkward image yet: a dead boy, sliding down an ice covered road. This event--the dead boy--comes out of the quietude of the film like a shot from a gun, startling us into realzing the true and serious consequences of everyday actions. The true glory of the film is in Tobey Maguire's part: his revelations are the most universal, but also in their silent way, the most startling. Ang Lee has a lot to offer American cinema and is only going to keep getting better.

Beautiful and sincere
i think that dysfunctional family films are so successful because people can relate to them easily. We all know that things are not as perfect as we want them to be, or as we present them. The perfect family is far from perfect and the quiet life in the suburbs is not as boring and ordinary as is seems. I loved the sincerity of this little story and the way the plot deals with real issues. It has a bit of a gloomy atmosphere but I loved it. The name "ice storm" was a very clever choice and so was the storm itself, towards the end of the movie.

wonderful movie
what a great movie, gloomy yet emotional and sincere. It's a tale about suburban life and all the troubles that lurk behind the seemingly peaceful facades: dysfunctional families, crumbling relationships, the hardships of growing up and so on.
