A Great Movie
I loved this movie. It was fantastic, action packed, and relatively gory. The story got me intrigued and kept me that way. None of the actors were really famous, so I associated with the character's name and personality instead of substituting it...

A Great Movie
I loved this movie. It was fantastic, action packed, and relatively gory. The story got me intrigued and kept me that way. None of the actors were really famous, so I associated with the character's name and personality instead of substituting it with the actors.
There is one downside. According to a lot of people in the EOD units, this title is not very realistic. But then again, it's just a movie, and it's not like they meant in offensively. All in all, a great movie

Overrated but good
I had high expectations from the movie, I was even for it in the rivalry between the ex-couple James Cameroon and Kathryn Bigelow, but I mist admit I was a little disappointed. It is indeed a good and very tense war drama, and you're on the edge waiting for the next explosion and hoping they'll survive it. But it is also very simplistic, you know who will die, you know what will happen to the little kid, who will lose it, etc'. So war is hell, but we know it already. The uniqueness is that it is shown through the eyes of a bomb squad, and shows a different aspect of the terror of war.

I didn't see any of the other contenders, so I can't comment on that. Compared to previous years' winners, I have to say I don't think it matches up. There was nothing cinematically different than any other war movie. Jeremy Renner was fantastic, which cannot be discounted. But did this win Best Picture *because* it was directed by a woman? I'm just not so sure a dude helming it would have made much of an impact. Let's see, in the last ten years, Gladiator, A Beautiful Mind, Lord of the Rings, Crash, The Departed.... I'm just not so sure :)

My, this was a good one. Stellar cinematography and editing, nicely pitched performances, and the ending could not have been better. Mandatory viewing for people who can see.

"THE HURT LOCKER" is a winner by any measure. Great characters we come to know, a tight script and non-stop tension make for a you-are-there portrait of soldiers in Iraq, in this case a bomb squad. The film focuses on three members of the squad -- a frightened youngster, a seasoned vet who's approaching the end of his tour, and a new captain who's a bit too gung-ho for the rest of the crew. We follow the squad through its last 30 days of rotation and the film practically makes us feel like we're living through it ourselves. This is an exceedingly well-acted and -directed movie you won't want to miss.

Hurt Locker is recieving ALOT of attention of late. Just short of four stars, this film is very well made and action in every scene. There are so many military films out there its tough to separate them from on another. While Hurt locker might be one of the best, unlike others, I cant say its any better than The Green Zone starring Matt Damon which I screened a few months ago. Jeremy Renner is great and the bis names in the movie mostly make cameos. You will have to see this to find out what the hype is all about but I enjoyed it, didnt love it but enjoyed it.

Given the amount of underground hype this film has received, I was expecting it to be the second coming of movie Jesus. Needless to say I was disappointed. You'd think its rabid supporters had never seen a war movie before. Don't get me wrong, I liked it, being a war movie buff, but I didn't really feel as though it broke any new ground. Although, I suppose it was a refreshing change to see a film about the current Gulf War that refuses to take a political stance. Instead it takes a more intimate and (mostly) realistic look at the war through the eyes of the grunts doing all the dirty work, a la Saving Private Ryan and other films of its ilk. In this case, the grunts are three weary bomb-defusing GIs who literally count the days until the end of their tour of duty. Each soldier fits a standard war-movie stereotype: one's experienced and by-the-book, another is green and unsure of himself, and the third is a gutsy maverick who's so good at his job it's borderline disturbing. Yeah, we've seen these guys many times before, but the bomb-defusing scenes are all so intense and believable that the film's occasional lapses into cliched territory are forgivable. In short, I recommend the film but don't really expect to see it mentioned very much during awards season unless this proves to be another overall disappointing year in movies like 2008.
