I was skeptical about a modern monster movie but The Host was imminently enjoyable. The characters are interesting and human and their travails provide a nice emotional base; the mechanics of their separate arcs and motives, and how they move the story along are all impressively handled. The monster is all CGI with a few puppet effects for detail shots, but it's designed and integrated into the film so well that I hardly thought "special effect" at all.

Definitely in the vein of the old Godzilla movies, that is, big monster, captured heroine, and over the top everything. Unfortunately, the formula has not progressed much over time.

I agree with someone else's comment that this movie started very strongly and then falls apart. Watching a bunch of people on the river watching some creature moving and then come rolling onto shore was great, and the effects of the creature were pretty good. However, soon after, the story for me turned into the cliched government conspiracy and a rehash of the movie Outbreak with people being quarantined and trying to get free to resolve foo. Then, in my biggest pet peeve with creature flicks, the creatures size/mass changes to suit the movie. The ending with the primary character and the pole with the creature was just very weak IMO. Either way, at least something original.

The host could have been a very good movie, and it probably was -- in Korea, and in Korean.
Unfortunately, the English dialog sounds as though it was done by "wanna-be" actors. It's painful at times, and I feel fortunate that I didn't simply give up during the first few minutes.
Having said that, I suspect that The Host would be better to listen to in Korean with English subtitles. Seriously - the American voice-overs are that painfull.
But, do yourself a favor, ignore the amateur voices, and enjoy a horror movie that has significantly more depth and complexity than the average US product.

The hype of this film was in overdrive and I decided to wait for awhile before viewing it. The start of the film had a great set-up and one scary water creature. All they had to do was go with that and this could have been really great. Instead...

The hype of this film was in overdrive and I decided to wait for awhile before viewing it. The start of the film had a great set-up and one scary water creature. All they had to do was go with that and this could have been really great. Instead you don't see enough of the monster and the story veers off from where it should be. I can see why others loved the film. It is very orginal for today but a throwback to Godzilla and other monsters with people running in the streets in mayham. I didnt hate the film I just wish it stayed more of a horror film than turn into a story about a missing girl which was good but too much of it. Rent if for the goof factor and you will be entertained but it's not as action packed as you might think.

The only thing I enjoyed about The Host was the monster's introduction, about five minutes of people being eaten and chased through a park. Two stars for that, otherwise a very boring movie.

And like every other korean movie I've seen, production values are incredible. every shot was really thought out very well. cool behind the scenes too. it really goes indepth into the concepts behind designing the monster.... lots of artwork.

If only this movie maintained the energy and promise set by the first monster scene, then this would be a stellar film. Instead you have a really cool monster which needs more screen time around large groups of people; monster need large supporting casts to
well to eat. There are some surprisingly funny scenes but at the end of the day the movie seems to get off track. The film ends up being about 20 minutes too long; it would not have been difficult to cut this down into a tight funny monster romp. Instead you have a slightly bloated, semi-funny monster movie.
