The Hammer, 2007

The Hammer is a very feel-good movie about a semi-retired boxer who wants to take one more shot at being big-time. He puts his carpentry career on hold, and with the help of his Nicaraguan friend, sets out to make it to the Olympics. You'll think you pretty much have it figured out early on, but I assure you that you won't. I appreciate that Carolla hired his longtime friend to play the part of Ozzie in this movie... the man turns out to be the real heart of the film. I also like that the movie didn't always go for the obvious joke when possible, and instead took everything one step further. I think Carolla is a promising comedic actor, mostly because of his quick wit and sense of humor, but also for his everyman style. I hope he continues to work on his acting career, and possibly direct at some point. I think he could certainly do no worse than Tim Allen has in his strikingly similar post-TV show career.
