Profile of The Grudge

The mood of The Grudge is scary, suspenseful, and mind bending. The plot centers around a woman in danger, ghosts, and curses, spells and rituals. It is a horror, thriller, and mystery movie. Stylistically, The Grudge involves twists and turns and is gory. In approach, it is serious. The pacing is slow. The Grudge takes place, at least partly, in a haunted house. The setting is Tokyo. It happens in contemporary times. The Grudge is a remake. The movie is known for being a blockbuster. Note that it includes violent content.

Summary of The Grudge

A remake of the Japanese horror hit JU-ON (widely considered to be one of the scariest movies ever made), THE GRUDGE is helmed by its original director Takeshi Shimizu. Like its predecessor, this Hollywood version of the film takes place in Tokyo, but most of the main characters are American, including Karen (Sarah Michelle Gellar of BUFFY THE VAMPIRE SLAYER), a young social worker, and her peers. When Karen enters a seemingly abandoned home to look after a mentally disturbed resident, she soon discovers that there's an evil--and very aggressive--presence in the house, and it's lashing out at every person that sets foot inside.

Having directed both the original JU-ON and its sequel in Japan, Shimizu was very familiar with his own tale of terror by the time he directed its 2004 incarnation. Using many of the key actors from the previous films (including Takako Fuji and Yuya Ozeki who have unforgettable roles), Shimizu recreates the story with the added advantage of a Hollywood budget (acquired with the help of producer Sam Raimi of SPIDER-MAN fame, who is also a noted horror-movie director). As with many Japanese horror films (particularly the original RING, which strongly influences this movie), THE GRUDGE relies on atmosphere over plot, resulting a series of utterly chilling moments that will leave viewers fascinated and unbelievely frightened.

Having heard so many good things about The Grudge, I must admit my hopes were high and my interest was piqued. On the other hand, it is a horror movie, and if I've learned anything over the years it's that horror movies are rarely scary. So I hit play hoping for the best, but expecting the worst. After and hour and a half, my expectations had been far exceeded. As far as horror movies go, The Grudge was outstanding. There were several scenes where the mood and atmosphere had my spine tingling. Children in movies do one of two things for me. They either piss me off or creep me out. In this case, it was definitely the latter. Some moments in The Grudge were fairly routine horror movie filler. Others were refreshingly original. I'd say my biggest complaint was that the musical score often seemed to give things away. I felt like some events were pushed or rushed by the score, diminishing their overall effect. The DVD looked and sounded good. The audio was very effective, using the surrounds to create an environment that was very creepy. Towards the end of the The Grudge, there was some bass that taxed my system to its limits. It's not often that a DVD makes my system's weaknesses overly apparent, but this one did. I can only imagine what this would have sounded like on a more powerful subwoofer with a greater frequency range! The video was also good, although not much better than average. The movie was mostly very dark, and the shadows were detailed and easy on the eyes. The detail levels were adequate and the blacks were solid, as required by such a dark film. I saw no defects or flaws in the transfer. If you're looking for a horror film that's for the most part refreshingly original, The Grudge comes highly recommended.
