I really like this movie. It stumbles out of the starting gate, looking for all the world like a Three Stooges short, but it soon transforms into so much more. It seamlessly blends together Chaplin's brand of clever physical humor with a searing indictment of Hitler and the Nazi party just prior to the U.S.'s entry into WWII. The funniest scenes are the ones with Chaplin as Adenoid Hynkel. Chaplin's eloquent and impassioned speech at the end feels slightly out of place, especially given his character's slightly dim-witted nature up to that point, but it's a classic scene, nevertheless, and gives the whole film some last-minute gravitas.

Only Charlie Chaplin could take such a painful subject and make fun of it. Only Chaplin could take such an evil character and make him look so silly. What a brilliant satire! It's a really funny movie, but like all Chaplin films, it has a serious message for society. The last scene is the best, where the switching roles situation goes too far, and the Jewish barber makes his speech. This is the part where the fake becomes real and the message is serious and clear. The greatness of Chaplin is in the fact that his characters only talk when there's something important to say, and he can draw your attention to the world's problems by making you laugh.
