I enjoy seeing now-famous actors in their breakthrough roles. In The Graduate, Dustin Hoffman proves that he has a unique style and charisma that will make him a Hollywood regular. As the movie progresses and Hoffman's character changes, the viewer can see more and more of the tell-tale mannerisms that make Hoffman stand out. After years of hearing "Mrs. Robinson" jokes and allusions, I know exactly who Anne Bancroft is and understand what the fuss was about.
All of the performances were great, and the story was a nice twist on a classic idea. The soundtrack was a nice collection of Simon and Garfunkel tunes, and even though I'm not a fan, it fit perfectly. I thoroughly enjoyed every minute of The Graduate. I can't decide, though, how to categorize this one. Was it a comedy? Well, it had many funny moments, but I don't think I'd say it's a comedy. Is it a drama? Yes, but not one that takes itself too seriously. Is it a romance? Well...
The DVD was labeled "Special Edition," but special it was not. The sound mix was the original stereo, which is fine, but it could have been cleaned up. Many sequences seemed clipped, or too loud for the capabilites of the recording equipment the time. A few scenes had dialog that was overshadowed by background audio. This all could have been cleaned up and presented in a nice Dolby Digital 2.0 track. The video was pretty rough, as well. The print showed quite a bit of damage and debris. The detail levels were terrible, and the shadow detail was very lacking. I realize that the source material is over 35 years old now, but a better presentation of a great film like The Graduate doesn't seem like to much to ask. I'd guess this is the same transfer used on the laserdisc edition.

Classic!
This movie about a older woman who pursues a younger man is a amazing classic. Dustin Hoffman at his best as an insecure college student. Soundtrack is also amazing.
