Intriguing and well acted
I don't know what people want from De Niro - I liked this second direction of his as much as I liked his first. In light of his recent titles as an actor, I think I even prefer him that way (even in this movie he has a hard time losing his gangsta act, at least in his first scene).
Anyways, this movie is very well played by all of its distinguished cast, and especially by Mat Damon. I even managed to like Angelina here, which is a rare thing. The story is good, the atmosphere and pace are fine with me, I wasn't bored for one sec, and I was intrigued all the way till the end. If you're looking for a slick, action packed spy movie, like a James Bond or Jason Bourne title, or even a De-Niro gangsta like title, this is not the movie for you. Maybe that's why many disappointed.

This movie seems to be missing something. While Angelina Jolie is an excellent actress, her character is completely superfluous to this story. There are definite areas of missing plot and development in this movie, and although it has great potential it never quite makes the mark of becoming a good political thriller. DeNiro tried hard, but ended up with a mish mosh of information which left you wondering how did we get here, and scratching your head in confusion.

He gets credit for putting together a lot of big names and faces in the cast, but we just get to watch them talk for almost 3 hours. If you want a much better spy thriller, check out "Breach".

What could have been an interesting film turned out to be an overlong very poorly edited and confusing film with an all star cast not even able to save this mess. I had mild expectations and had to rewind scenes multiple times in order to follow what was happening. Matt Damon who I usually enjoy who devoid of any human emotion. While his character might have been like that it just made him less interesting than R2D2 from Star Wars. Now I know why this film fell by the waistside once it was released. Avoid this film and see something else.

What a film! DeNiro scores big here. This isn't just about the forming of the CIA, but through that story we get insights into marriage, growing old, the passage of time and the nature of honesty. Rarely has such a specific story been able to shed light on such large issues. Recommended for those that like to think about films. Might be a bit slow moving for those looking for popcorn fare.
