For intelligent children, and adults who like to read out loud to them, this covers some of the same fantasy ground as "The Lion, The Witch, etc," but in a much more secular, vaguely scientistic (cum metaphysical) and adventurous way. The first two-thirds are gorgeous, beautiful fun with all sorts of gadets, stunning photography and elaborate settings in a semi-fantasyland. (Five stars for that part alone.) The last half hour in the arctic with highly unusual polar bears was less entrancing to me, except for the good character development of the down-and-out polar bear, but kids may find that the most exciting with its chases and battle scenes. The adult figures have smaller roles, but Nicole Kidman makes for an elegant and nuanced woman of ambiguous motives. One may find fault with the story (and I am not talking about the message to resist decrepit authoritarianism which is fine by me), but the children are brave and clever---isn't that the point?--and the scenery is to breathe in. Big screen escapism of a high order. 8.09

Excellent story. Great special effects. A lot of violence. Not a great movie for sensitive young teens, but my 16 year old nephew and I loved it.

Yes, this is the movie based on the book by the atheist. If you can get past that and the hoopla surrounding that little Holy War, you may allow yourself to enjoy a movie. I thought it was amazingly imaginative. The world where the movie takes place is so foreign that it reminded me of how complete a "universe" can be - something like Lord or the Rings - where every detail is pre-planned and thought through. My only complaint is the lack of an ending. You can practically hear the sound of tires skidding on pavement as the director unexpectedly slams on the emergency brake and practically flashes a sign in pink neon proclaiming, "Sequel Forthcoming *bzzzzdt* Sequel Forthcoming *bzzzzdt* Sequel Forthcoming..."

Well, I'm not sure what all the uproar was about - it's a movie that has an over-zealous religous order that a group is trying to wrestle control from, but how is that more offensive than the hundreds of other films that portray the same thing. Setting that aside, I found the movie relatively slow and rather boring in various stages. While Narnia starts off slow and then gets rolling - this one starts and stops multiple times and it gets cumbersome. Overall, I wasn't impressed nor was I entertained really with the movie, and I have not read the book. Effects were good and everyone looked great - but none of the characters really left an impression, except maybe Sam Elliot and his rabbit. Funny how Daniel Craig got top billing but is hardly in the movie. Either way, since the movie bombed it's unlikely we'll be seeing any sequels.

Compass is an outstanding showcase of visual effects, with great acting, and a pretty reasonable tale to go along with them. Whatever religious themes were going on that led to controversy over this movie - I didn't notice them and didn't care in the least. I just know that the movie tells an interesting story, though some of it is definitely muddy and rushed for those who have not read the novel. It's a beautiful movie though, and most of the CG is amazing. The Polar Bears, the "Fairy" dust, etc. They should have won many awards for the visual effects alone.

Unfortunately, 'The Golden Compass' seems to have been made primarily for people who were familiar with the book series it is based upon, because I had almost no idea what was happening. The first 5 minutes of the film attempts to pack in a lot of exposition to catch you up to speed, but it doesn't do it effectively; I found myself wishing I had Cliff's Notes about 20 minutes in.

I enjoyed "The Golden Compass" mostly for its wonderful imagery and because I'm a sucker for fantasy. Still, the film flags in its second half and becomes more evidently a children's movie (not too surprisingly). There's a sense that the producers are swamped with a zillion details from the book that they have to wade through quickly, and perhaps that's why the film appears a bit disjointed, with events popping quickly without any time to show us their emotional impact on the characters.

Read the books!
The movies follows the main lines of the first book. And it's more or less the only thing we can see. We do understand most of the universe : daemons and humans, the parallel worlds, the special interactions between Lyra and her compass, etc, but as a movie itself The Golden Compass is just mediocre.
Nicole Kidman is as good as always, but we don't see much of Daniel Craig and the little girl isn't as agressive and charismatic as Lyra in the books.
And that's just the main problem about this movie : every piece of background we can get in the movie is rushed and superficial compared to the book.
Let's say The Golden Compass doesn't destroy the original, it just gives us a too small piece of it.

Marvelous Nicole Kidman full of glory in this movie and it just benefit from that. This fantasy is about a parallel world where you not allowed mentioning the word "dust". A little girl is exposed to this word and reveals it isn't just a myth. Her father gave her a secret golden compass that she only can read and that will lead her to the most important place. She must to keep it safe, even from Mrs. Coulter. It's A great adventure full of escapades and rivalry but also full with courage and self discovery. At the end I stayed with some expectation for more…
