The Final Destination 3D, 2009

The only good thing about the latest installment of the "Final Destination" series is the 3D. I'd go so far as to say that this isn't worth seeing at all if you don't see it in 3D, and a 2D version was available at the cinema where I saw it. Don't bother; as a movie, this isn't nearly as good as any of the first three. The acting is pretty bad, the story is thin at best, and it lacks the black humor and intricate death scene machinations that gave the first three films a certain Rube Goldman charm. This time, a group of college-age kids are at a race track when the grisly deaths begin and they must figure out how to get their names off the Grim Reaper's checklist. The deaths are squirm-inducing, certainly, and the 3D is used and abused at every turn. It's handled well enough to have elicited some ducking from the audience as sharp objects and gas canisters seemed to catapult from the screen every three seconds. The observant viewer will also note that every single woman in the background is buxom and that there are a LOT of product placement shots (I wonder how much money Pepsi put into this film!). There's even an inevitable close-up naked bouncing breasts scene. That's all there is, though... lots of sizzle, no steak. If you're up for a funhouse ride, this might be worth your time. If you're going to see it without 3D, or if you don't care about that sort of thing in the first place, there's little point to "The Final Destination".
