A Knockout
I'd been putting off seeing The Fighter since it's release because I thought it'd be just another boxing movie that the critics always seem to fawn over. Needless to say the film completely shattered all my expectations, and is definitely one of the top films of 2010.
The Fighter is not solely the story of a down-and-out boxer, but the story about a family trying to stay together when they can't help but drag each other down. Melissa Leo, Christian Bale, Amy Adams and Mark Wahlberg are all incredibly captivating in their roles and do an incredible job.
The shining star of the film is without a doubt Melissa Leo. I've been a fan of her's since her performance in Frozen River and I'm so glad she was able to take home the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress. Her take on the overly-ambitious matriarch Alice Ward was something I wasn't expecting; Leo brings to the character a sense of sympathy and motherly charm hidden deep under her domineering facade. There was a point in the film where I felt such sympathy towards her, and was actually rooting for Alice to succeed. It would have been incredibly easy to make this character completely unlikeable, unattached and one-dimensional, but Leo brings a powerhouse performance which earns her a well-deserved Oscar.
The only bad thing I can say about the film is that, yes, it is somewhat predictable; but nonetheless one of the most entertaining, finely acted and directed movies which you will find from 2010.

The Fighter, 2010
Easy to see why Christian Bale won the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor. What I liked most about The Fighter is that it is enjoyable for anyone, whether or not they dig watching sports or movies based on the lives of specific athletes. The movie is a glimpse into a different kind of dysfunction. I have a predisposition to like Mark Wahlberg based solely upon his role in I <3 Huckabees, but his performance in the movie was just as it should have been. When they show the snippet of the two brothers the movie was based on at the end of the film, it really gives you a chance to see how spot on Christian Bale and Mark Wahlberg were in their portrayal of the characters.

Rocky meets 2010. A story of heart and having a last chance at a dream. It’s a great story and such realistic characters, which made them relatable and that much more likeable. I think this movie definitely has what it takes to be considered for an best movie Oscar. You are fighting for the underdog which is nothing too new, but it has heart and courage. It shows how no matter hard you fight, what matters the most is how much you want it. Good movie for men and women, everyone will love it and walk away happy.

Great film!
Christian is great at everything. I bet he'd beat Chuck Norris in a fight. Jokes aside, Bale's performance together with the wonderful cast is definitely overthrowing!

I loved this film even before watching a minute. A periodic drama about the personal true story of an athlete. Also, it features Wahlberg and Bale, some of my favorite actors in the business. What's not to like. But of course with such high expectations, a disappointment is something you might expect also. Luckily, is was better the expected. Bale is absolutely superb here, Wahlberg is real convincing, and the story, though expected is the height of what deserved to be called a drama. Oh, and Amy Adams is stunning!

Got an early screening of this film in NJ and went to see it based on the actors involved and knowing a little about the boxer Mickey Ward. Many including myself will see this as another Rocky type movie. While it is about boxing the story is about family, love, addiction, pain and laughs. Pretty much a very well rounded film that will get attetion for both Wahlberg and Bale but more so for Bale who once again drops weight and looks every bit the part of the drug addicted former boxer. Great ending and very different then what I expected. Then again with the actors involved your already expecting a great movie and it was truly memorable.
