The film however is wonderful. On the edge of Germany and Turkey, on German and Turkish identity, a couple of individual tragedies take place and force a younger man and an older woman to explore their mixed identities (whether Turkish/German or bourgeois/bohemien). Beautiful drama and beautiful pictures of Turkey.
There are only two weaknesses in this film. One is that there are too many story lines that are forcibly intertwined. The other is that the film maker apparently is not done yet with exploring his own mixed German and Turkish identity which results in a representation of the German that I found too sober and of Turkish too romanticized or too extreme.

Oh, Fatih Akin, you odd genius! After "Head On," this is the second Akin film I've seen and it's better than the first. Akin is still a young director, but he's now on my must-watch list. This film has the same crisply-shot mix of scenes in Germany and Turkey you came to expect after "Head On." It's got the same great soundtrack. The story (or stories) and the acting are where it rises beyond its predecessor. It was a real treat to see Hanna Schygulla as Lotte's mother; she may have lost her beauty, but her acting skills remain entirely convincing. The Turkish actress Yesilcay is a beautiful firecracker and carries off her revolutionary role with success. What the story has to say about the pointlessness of death and the importance of family is interesting and well-communicated. I can't give this film five stars because there are some minor defects, but it is a very strong four star flick and one I recommend.

"The Edge of Heaven" takes place in Istanbul, Turkey, and Bremen, Germany -- seemingly worlds apart, but not really. Its six main characters are two mothers, two daughters, and a father and son, who have feet in both cities, so to speak, both worlds, and whose paths cross convincingly. The roles are beautifully, outstandingly played. The director's sensibility is thoroughly modern and neither the Turkish or German culture is white-washed; terrorism, violence, and sex rears up throughout. I think you'll find the characters believable and engaging, and the story they find themselves in is fascinating.
