10/10Must See
A young American student, Matthew, (Michael Pitt) goes to Paris in order to study French. His love of cinema, brings him into contact with a Frenchwoman, Isabelle, (Eva Green) and her fraternal twin brother, Théo (Louis Garrel). All three love the movies, especially "the classics." As their friendship grows, Matthew learns of the intimacy shared by the siblings and gets pulled into their world of sexual games and jealousies. Eventually he falls in love with them, and the three seclude themselves from the world, staying in their apartment and masturbating and having non-stop sex. They stop only long enough to bath, scrounge up something to eat, and drink themselves into a drunken stupor. Eva Green's nude scenes are breathtaking, because this young lady is drop dead gorgeous. May not be for everyone, be warned there is some serious frontal nudity here. My opinion, it is a 5*****Star Movie.

Whew. They are selling this movie like it is some wild sex romp, with phantasmorgoric kinks, when in fact, what appeal it does have is based on a certain innocence. It is in some ways a familiar story of some youths working out their issues in a three-way affair, all set in the politically turbulent Paris of 1968. Not exactly a new scenario so far, but all three are exceptionally avid movie buffs, even by French standards. From that, there are plenty of references to old classics, including even a few clips from appropriate scenes--and that is one of the the most arresting parts of the movie. Yes, there is some total nudity, and a little activity that is just a bit more explicit than many R-rated movies, but that is not really the main focus here. (There's less than two minutes altogther of stuff that got it the higher rating, I would guess.) Actually, there is a kind of lost sweetness to all of them, and the events outside on the streets are occasionally vivid--but essentially incidental. An English-speaking French brother and sister, and a wide-eyed (but rather common-sensical in his way) American young man mix it up with a few twists and turns. But one gets the feeling it is mainly this much-decorated director's affectionate look back at old movies, old times, and old friends. Revelations, yes. But no revolution---then or now. It is good work from a sometimes-great sixty-something director who apparently wants to look back at life---and regret nothing. Who can blame him? At least 3 or 4 stars. 4.09

once I read a review saying this movie is "the makings of a horny aging man". there's something about it. this mixture of politics and a bizarre love triangle is very unconvincing.
