The film pulled me in so far that I barely noticed the point-of-view cinematography that so many mentioned in their reviews. I didnt even think of it between the first few minutes and the moment after I finished the movie and read the reviews. This is coming from a guy that always notices cinematography in any movie- I will leave it at that!

In my view Jean-Do, the paralytic subject of this film, was paralyzed even before his stroke episode. He is gradually revealed through flash backs as a cheat and a selfish hypocrite. The book he wrote by batting his left eyelid merely showed that his ego was even more powerful than his malady.
This film is an indulgent yet tedious orgy of self righteousness. Face it, Jean-Do was merely a self absorbed individual and a disgrace; what happened was too good for him.

Gave it disappointing, and had to explain:
Don't get me wrong - it's a beautiful film and I'm really glad I got to watch it. Unfortunately there was too much build up for me before watching it, so I really didn't have a choice but to be disappointed. I'm sad that was the case for me, and I...

Unfortunately there was too much build up for me before watching it, so I really didn't have a choice but to be disappointed. I'm sad that was the case for me, and I really do wish I could give it a better rating. So my advice is - go watch it, don't wait another second, because it is a rare film. Just make sure not to let anyone ruin it for you. Go watch it now, and don't tell anybody about your plans...

An emotional, visual experience.
Fantastic cinematography. Beautifully acted. A truly uplifting and emotional film that captures the essence of Bauby's genuinely written memoir.

Only a poor rating due to the Instant Watch feature. The movie is originally in French, but the instant watch feature is an English dub. Get the actual disk.

I DIDNT WANT TO SEE ANOTHER DEPRESSING FILM AND ALMOST AVOIDED DIVING BELL. Well I watched it and was happy I gave this uplifting foreign film a chance. While the topic of a successful magazine editor having a massive stroke and being completly paralized sounds anything but sad, you have to watch the entire movie to get it's message that life is short and as they say LIFE IS WHAT YOU MAKE IT. Again I cannot stress how much I wanted to see a comedy or action film but Diving Bell hooked me right in and I don't remember pausing the movie at all. Remember this film has subtitles but it's an emotional story of love, regret, and the fight in the human spirit which I think most anyone can understand in any language. I never read the book it was based on but director Julian Schnabel truly captures what it feels like to be awakened from a coma being confused and lost. From the start of the film you see through the eyes of the main character which is perfectly executed. THIS IS NOT ANOTHER DRAMA and is worth your time. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!!

A tender, genuine, uniquely-told fim about a man who is completely paralyzed (based on a true story) and how he wrote an autibiography by just blinking. While the story is admittedly a tough one to tell cinematically, Schnabel does just about the best he can with such visually limiting material--culminating in his use of the imagery of the diving bell and the butterfly as symbols for the main character's odd imprisonment. Slow at times and even veering toward boredom, "The Diving Bell and the Butterfly" is as good as it possibly can be.
