Watch the original
I actually watched this after watching Infernal Affairs and I didn't know Departed was a remake. I found the story strangely familiar while watching it and then it finally hit me and then I got pissed. I'm really tired of remakes especially of great movies that haven't been out for even 10 years.
The movie might be slightly better than I rated it but I though it was pretty good while watching it, but then when I figured it out my blind rage colored the rest of it. I am still very comfortable in saying that as close as movie reviews can get to objectivism, this movie is not as good as Infernal Affairs; so watch the original and I don't want to hear anyone ever complain of subtitles because dubbing makes everything shit; with the exception of a few animes.

If you haven't already seen this you need to. This is the best Martin Scorsese movie since Goodfellas. This is one good movie.

This my favorite movie of the last decade. Of course "The Departed" won Best Picture so I won't say it's underrated, but I think it's been almost universally misunderstood. At heart this movie is a comedy. It's a parody of.. well.. Scorcese pictures. It's done so slyly and competently that people think they're watching a regular mob picture. They like it but then, later, when they think back on the movie, doubts start to creep in. Wasn't Nicholson a little too hammy? Wasn't that rat crawling on the windowsill too "on-the-nose"? Boy, there sure were an awful lot of coincidences. Everyone but Marky Mark dies? EVERYONE? Scorcese is using the Stones "Gimme Shelter" AGAIN? They begin to doubt the movie. They think these are flaws in a realistic gangster picture. They're not, this is a comedy. It's over-the-top on purpose. Don't believe me? Watch/rewatch "After Hours" which establishes the subtly dark Scorcese humor and then sink deeper with "The King of Comedy". But especially rewatch "Cape Fear", another remake like "The Departed", that deconstructs itself as it plays. If "The Departed" is approached as a dark send-up, which I contend this movie is, it will make more sense and you will see a much different, better movie. And funnier. Nicholson is pulling a human hand out of a ziplock for crying out loud! Scorcese is saying "I can do what Tarantino does, subvert the genre, and I can do it better and throw in some old school suspense while I'm at it." Personally, I think the old man beat Tarantino at his own game. 5 solid stars.

The casting really hurt this movie. DeCaprio may have done a couple of push-ups prepping for this role, but he was far from believable as not just a tough guy, but a tough guy that was tough enough to beat up thugs and mobsters two or three at a time. Some of his delivery was good in his more emotional scenes, but he just couldnt sell his "fits of rage." I went into it thinking he might not have been the best choice for the role, but I gave him a chance. After all, I thought the same thing about Michael Keaton when I heard he was going to be Batman and I thought Damon could never pull off an action role like the Bourne movies. Unfortunately, DeCaprio didnt prove me wrong like those two were able to do.
Speaking of Damon, he gave a strong performance and sold the character well enough to make me have a conflicted opinion of whether or not to root against him or for him. And I wouldnt be surprised if this movie put Martin Sheen back in regular rotation in big name movies.
The plot was well-developed and didnt take long at all to get off the ground. The plots works hard enough at developing characters that the line between good guy and bad guy gets pretty hazy.
The only other major knock I have against the film is the ending. I wont spoil the ending by going into detail, but the way everything was wrapped up seemed rushed and didnt fit well with how sturdy the rest of the plot development was.
This could have easily been a four star movie with better casting and a five star movie had they spent a little more time on the films climax.

I'm the kind of person who enjoys being enwrapped in a movie. i typically don't allow myself to judge future events within the movie but rather let them occur as the story unfolds. I was not able to do that in this movie as the plot was so blatantly obvious. I let that go and just tried to focus on other things, but the acting and dialogue was so generic that there was nothing left to hold onto. I'm not much of an action buff but even that was left on the floor.

The original is much better.
Yes, this is just a remake of the Hong Kong movie 'Internal Affairs.' They just changed scenery. I hate copy and paste movies.

A great detective movie, but a lousy cop movie (sorry, Mr. Wells!). The acting is great and the pacing excellent. You stay hooked through the entire movie. And yet, it was hard not to ask at the end "so what was that all about?" There was so much talent on display, and yet it was as deep as Ocean's 11. For that it seemed like a waste, as this was a movie that could have reached for the stars instead of being a really great action movie & nothing more.

There's nothing I can really add to the mountains of reviews that already exist to sing the praises of Martin Scorsese's latest crime thriller The Departed. If you have to actually make a choice at the ticket counter and you legitimately can't decide between this or The Grudge 2 or The Marine then just, please, stop watching movies altogether. There is no choice.
The Departed is a swaggering, cocky film about swaggering, cocky men trapped in intense and unenviable positions in a Massachusets state police force--Damon as a bad cop with Irish mob ties, DiCaprio as a good cop with Irish mob ties. The two, without explicit knowledge of each other, play a nail-biting game of cat and mouse in an effort to arrest/protect mobster Frank Costello (Jack Nicholson). Paranoia ensues.
Time will be very kind to this movie. You will see many folks start to call it one of their favorite movies. You will see it remembered as one of the "great" roles for at least four of the main actors. It will probably be played over and over on TNT two years from now. It may also be the movie that finally earns Scorsese that directing Oscar he's missed out on.
It's as good as you've heard. There's not much else I can say when a movie promises something and delivers it as promised. All movies should be so fortunate.

Makes you want to see the original movie Infernal Affiars and it's sequals.
