The Dark Knight Rises, 2012

In some ways this franchise gets worst as it gets better. In 'Batman Begins' Nolan created a world that Batman naturally fit into. In 'The Dark Knight' the story got bigger and better but a change in architecture meant that Batman no longer seemed to fit in the world. This film gets even bigger, even better and Batman, or rather Bruce Wayne, has no place in it at all. The saga is about a man becoming a symbol and that symbol out living him. The fact that Wayne lives to the end of the picture means that this journey is incomplete. We can see where the transition (from Wayne to Blake) should have come but it doesn't. Every action taken by Wayne after the 90 minute mark could and should have been done by someone else. But if you can manage to ignore Batman in this Batman film it's almost great. Each member of the supporting cast (especially Hathaway & Oldman) does a tremendous job. Nolan filmed it beautifully, save two scenes in the climax that lose depth of field once the movement stops. Hardy is set up as a very competent villain and Gordan-Levitt is a worthy successor. If it weren't for Batman I could love this film.
