This rates a full 5 stars on the "Quirkiness Scale." Both the story and characters are odd and interesting. The movie could so easily have been ruined by being the "One Billionth Fish-Out-Water Story." Our characters know enough about their environment that the plot doesn't have to dwell on 3 Americans in India, so thankfully the real story is allowed to develop. We are allowed to watch 3 brothers who are not particularly close grow as individuals and learn to appreciate and/or understand one another. The scenery is absolutely gorgeous and the sets are vibrantly colored as only India can produce. Owen Wilson's character spends much of his time with large bandages on his head (which look ridiculous and is a source of amusement) and that's probably only entertaining because it's not much of a plot point. I'm sure I'll rate this even higher the next time I watch it.

Beautiful. Simple. Touching. Wes Anderson has this delicious talent to give us just enough information for us to figure out the bigger picture and the deeper meaning to his stories. This film is beautifully symbolic, and is not over stylized. It seems to me that Wes Anderson has finally found his nicheĀ
he can make a movie with his own personal touches in it, but be detached enough from the production for the film to not become bombarded and oversaturated with his very unique style.

4/10Disappointing
Wes Anderson's films focus a lot on the connections and relationships that his different characters make during the course of the movie. However, for some reason, with the "Darjeeling Limited" being about family and with the main characters being three brothers, it seemed out of all of Anderson's movies, this one had the hardest time trying to portray those connections. It almost seemed there was going to be one specific point to where this movie was going at times but then never got there. Did they put Bill Murray in the movie just because? It also seemed that Wilson, Brody, and Schwartzman were trying to one up each other in scenes (and not because their characters were supposed to be like that) but rather as actors trying to out-do the other actors.
Normally with Wes Anderson's other films I can judge how well I enjoyed them by how aggrivated I get during any of his movies, the more aggrivation, the better a Wes Anderson film. Not only did I feel little aggrivation with "The Darjeeling Limited", it was hard to feel anything with this movie. Wes Anderson needs to start back at the beginning (i.e. Rushmore and Bottle Rocket) and maybe keep the films more simple. Or maybe Anderson and Wilson should stick to writing scripts and not let Schwartzman get involved.

Wes Anderson's schtick has finally run out of steam. His overly-ironic dry dialogue and direction was absolutely great for two or three movies, but now it's just starting to feel hateful toward the audience, and too cynical to keep me in my seat. There is not a moment in 'The Darjeeling Limited' during which I was not bored, and there was not a moment when I cared about any of the characters. One thing is for sure, 'limited' is a proper word to put in the title, although it probably should have been called 'The Emotionally Limited'.

Are you looking for wild and crazy action? How about an endless string of laugh out loud gags, does that sound good? No? You want a more mellow and nuanced movie? A movie that will not raise guffaws but instead steadily supply of chuckles is what you were looking for? If that is the case this is the right movie. It is not going to bowl you over and you may get sick of looking at luggage but you will smile, often. This is not a movie with an end in mind. Instead, it is showing you a journey that has no idea where it is going; ironic because it begins on a train. The Darjeeling Limited is not looking for a straight path to anywhere at all. It is nothing but a delightful stroll through India and that is all it needs to be.

Maybe because I've lived in India I appreciate this movie more than some other people might. It is not as laugh-out-loud funny as the Royal Tenenbaums or Rushmore, but there's still a lot of humor there. In the Royal Tenenbaums a narrator gives us the whole life story of nearly every character. What I like about the Darjeeling Limited is that we kind of get to figure these characters out as we go. Irrfan Khan is a great actor and was a great choice for the father in the village. This is probably my favorite part of the movie, when the brothers end up in the remote village for a few days. There is very little dialogue (in English) and India is left to speak for itself. I don't think Anderson has lost his directing abilities, but perhaps he is becoming more subtle in his storytelling. I enjoyed this movie just as much the second time around.

The Darjeeling Limited
I've seen all of Wes Anderson movies and while none have blown me away, I have enjoyed all of them. This movie is no different. It isn't terribly exciting, and there is no profound message that I could find in it. The characters are odd, but what Wes Anderson character isn't. The movie is somewhere between an action movie, a comedy, a drama and a mindlessly boring art film. I did find myself laughing out loud a few times, but I found that I was wanting the film to end about half way through since I was bored with the characters and really didn't care where it was going. None the less, it is wonderfully shot, and shows India in all its gritty beauty. If you like Wes Anderson type movies then I'd recommend it, if not, then you won't be missing much.
