MAN, I Had this in my que before it was released, and kept moving it down in my list. thinking other movies were better. Halloween is tommorow, and we could'nt find anything scary, So now that The Crazies is instant we decide to click on the movie NOT thinking it would be much of a scare......BOY WAS I WRONG, also I always thought the main actor wasn't that great, but BOY did he throw me off. The word for this MOVIE is EXCITING, From the second they were scanned until the end I was at the edge of my seat, heart racing, and I caught myself yelling "HELL YEAH" atleast 3 times. Seriously I haven't seen anything this FUN in a while ONE part was predictable the rest was a RIDE NOT to be missed. I even stopped in the middle had my friend come spend the night and she was jsut excited as I was (which is a hard emotion to get out of her) lol. So, we watched it till the end, neither one of us knowing the out come. There's going to be an encore for this one Tommorow night!!! Happy Halloween!

The original The Crazies did an excellent job of giving us an uncaring and befuddled government that understands what it did wrong, attempts to rectify it but cant stop tripping over its feet to get the job done. A government not smart enough to fix the problem, but strong enough to force you to watch them screw it up. In the remake we only get a government that for some reason is far too willing to bully citizens, a scientist (?) in a crashed car to fill in some plot details and a cold, watching eye in the sky to show that they have the means to do what they want.
Early Romero was a master at exploring what normal people would do in extraordinary situations. These were people that you could identify with, normal people, and that made you care about them. A firefighter, a nurse, for example. These non heroes that have to do heroic thing in the name of survival. The remake gave us the town sheriff, a deputy and a doctor as our potential heroes...only, they already were heroes.
But in the end - and this is where I think it went wrong - horror does much better when its socially and personally relevant; when it is an idea and people that we can identify with. Just like Invasion of the Body Snatchers explored our fear of communism, Night of the Living Dead poked at social changes, The Crazies pulls the Vietnam war to the home front.
The remake of The Crazies just didnt have that relevance and, instead, relied on modern scare tactics to keep you interested. Blood, a bit of gore, bad guys coming at you from all angles and ever increasing dire situations. This seems to be the formula for horror these days and, in my opinion, is a bit long in the tooth.
Oh, and (here be spoilers) one more thing: how we feel when we walk away from the film. In the original we have a feeling of pending global doom whereas the remake gave us what seems to be in every horror ending these days: hope with the possibility of a remake.
