Whoopi Goldberg was spectacular, Oprah Winfrey was well, she was Oprah, and that's as good as it gets. Danny Glover was the bad guy, but he was great in his role. I loved this movie and would recommend it to anyone. An epic tear-jerker. I gave it 4*****STARS

An epic, sweeping yet still personal tale of a family in early the 1900s South, The Color Purple is full of struggle, pain, and unhappiness, as well as the search for love. Just love, no matter how it comes.
The family's struggle (and specifically Cecilia) is compounded by the fact that they are black, and it's the South in the early 1900s. But at the core of the struggle is the evil of the patriarch, played with a cool ferocity by Danny Glover.
The real revelation of The Color Purple is that Whoopi Goldberg is a great actress. One wonders why, after this film (her very first film role) she never chose a project that would allow her at act, ever again. Her Oscar win for Sister Act was no doubt an acknowledgment of the win she should have earned for The Color Purple.
Another revelation: Oprah Winfrey is a great actress, too! While she hasn't acted hardly at all since The Color Purple, she should have. She should be acting somewhere, right now.

An important masterpiece
a strong, profound film, which criticises the way they treat black people in the USA, and the relations of the blacks among themselves. the acting is fantastic, the movie is touching with an amazing stories. recommended.
