The mood of The Code is suspenseful and exciting. The plot centers around a government agency, crime gone awry, and a heist. It is a crime, drama, and action movie. Summary of The Code

From acclaimed director Mimi Leder (Deep Impact), with an all-star action cast led by Morgan Freeman, Antonio Banderas and Radha Mitchell, THE CODE is full of deceit, thievery and twists at every turn. While pulling a down-and-dirty jewelry heist on a subway train, Gabriel (Banderas) encounters Ripley (Freeman), a legendary thief who was casing the same job. In spite of Gabriel's initial reluctance, Ripley manages to rope him into an impossible job: the theft of two priceless Faberge Imperial Eggs from the heavily guarded vault of a New York diamond wholesaler. The stakes rise for Gabriel and Ripley when Ripley's goddaughter (Mitchell) is kidnapped by the KGB. Staying one step ahead of the NYPD, the FBI, the diamond merchants and the vicious Russian KGB crime boss determined to have the priceless eggs for himself, Gabriel and Ripley must find a way to pull off the heist and make it out alive.

I didn't understand a damn thing about this movie. It's an incoherent heist film that's just a shameless mishmash of cliches. For instance, Morgan Freeman and Antonio Banderas attempt to rob a vault. Naturally, Banderas - the reliably terrible Senor Banderas - has to wiggle around some laser beams first. As we all know - despite their state of the art reputation - laser beams are vulnerable to wiggling around them, but halfway to the vault Banderas just pulls this device out of his pocket that shuts the laser beams off entirely. Umm.. what?!? Where did that contraption come from and, uh, why he didn't he just do that to begin with? Heist films don't have to be believable, but they do have to follow their own internal logic, no? The bloated cast includes a hot chick for softcore grinding purposes, two opposing sets of cops, some incompetent security guards and an untold number of interchangeable Russian mobsters named, um, Vladamir, I think. At the end it gets even more confusing with about 50 different double and triple crosses. You've seen it before - nobody is who they say, nothing is as it seems, the viewer has been punked - but here it's nuttier than ever. Turns out Antonio Banderas is not actually a master safecracker, he's a (SPOILER ALERT) short Jewish accountant from Albany. Morgan Freeman isn't really a grizzled old crime veteran - he rips his face off and underneath the mask he's a little Japanese geisha girl. Hell, this isn't even really a movie it's a flat shiny Krispy Kreme donut and you'd better get it out of your DVD player, pronto, before it mucks up the gears. Now, I'm sorry, I may have just dreamt up some of those, but the actual twists were equally inexplicable. The whole mess finally just folds in on itself so many times it turns into a whirling black hole sucking up everything in it's path including two hours of my life. Avoid this all costs unless you really like noisy senseless movies or have a thing for greasy Eurotrash men.
