political correctness turns the world upside down
A French comedy from 2001, which has everything that begs an American remake. I was surprised to find never such remake has been made (contrary to Trois hommes et un couffin), but maybe the original is too .... French? Too naughty? Too implicit? Too subtle? I can't see it.
Here is the given: François Pignon, a timid and subdued man, finds out he is about to be fired at the condom factory. His divorced wife and son, want nothing to do with him and so he finds no more reason to live. He is rescued from a tentative suicide attempt by his new neighbor who presents him with a trick to repair his life: fabricate the rumor he is actually a homosexual.
The alleged coming out of the closet of Pignon makes that his whole environment begins to react differently to him and his life takes a hilarious turn for the better.
A brilliant supporting role is played by Gerard Depardieu. Depardieu is the proverbial macho bully who has had a frequent go at Pignon in the past, but is now manipulated into being nice to the out-of-the-closet Pignon, which most of all brings about a deep identity confusion in Depardieu's character himself.

While this movie might definitely use many stereotypes of homosexuality, it's very amusing and funny. This is a light comedy, not a laugh-out-loud kind of comedy, so be warned. If you're in the mood for a funny French movie this is a great choice,...

If you're in the mood for a funny French movie this is a great choice, along with "Le diner de cons" from director and writer Francis Veber.
